Ed Shervington has become the latest player to join Worcester in the Championship next season after a signing a 12 month deal after his release from Ospreys.

The Welsh international plays in the hooker position and brings experience and enthusiasm to the club, which are two qualities they will need if they are going to get back into the Premiership at the first time of trying.

Shervington has said he does not see the chance of playing at Worcester as a burden to his international career. He sees it as quite the opposite. The point is that if he can play a big part in Worcester getting promoted then there is a bigger chance that Warren Gatland will pay him some attention as opposed to if he was playing a part-time role at a big club.

The hooker will take a number of key attributes to the South West club although it’s important that he tries to stay fit and healthy throughout his time at the club. He arrives just in time to get some hard work and some pre-season training routines done and this could mean he starts in the side at the beginning of next season.

Shervington brings a number of things to the table that are going to help his new side. He is a very big unit and this will be important for Worcester to use in breaking up some of the talented attacking teams in the Championship.

He can also be used in the pack to help drive the team forwards during normal play. He is likely to go right into the scrum, which will also give the team a better chance of turning scrums over and winning penalties for easy points during tight games.

He also has a great deal of experience for a 25 year old. Ospreys is not a poor club by any means and a number of talented players have played at the Welsh club. He will be able to bring this experience into the side and help the 19, 20 and 21 year-olds who are just breaking into the team.

Conservative

 

However, it is very important for Worcester fans to try and stay a little conservative because there are one or two dangers associated with their new signing. He is a very big unit and because of this there will be greater amounts of pressure going through his body.

This means that if Shervington picks up an injury it will be much worse than if it were an injury to a player smaller in size. This could force him into one or two spells in the sidelines as he looks to try and rest and get back to match fitness.

His calibre as a member of the Wales international side is likely to make him a target. There are some very big players in the Championship who are not blessed with the grace and charisma of some in the Premiership. This means Shervington will be targeted for tackles and challenges, which are just as likely to get him injured.

Worcester are obviously going to play indifferently across many games but the point is that if they keep making good and positive signings then their chances of consistency will improve.
