How the arithmetic works
A chasing team’s best case is its current points plus a win in every game it has left. If that maximum is higher than the leader’s current points, the chaser can still finish above them; if it is exactly equal, the best it can do is finish level, and the competition’s tiebreaker decides. For two teams that is exact: even when they still have to play each other, the chaser winning that match is the leader losing it.
The leader’s clinch number is the other side of the same sum: the points it needs to gain, or the chaser to drop, in any combination, before the chaser’s maximum can no longer reach it. The calculator answers the question for a pair of teams. Whether a side can win the whole league also depends on every other team above it, so run it against each one.

How do I know if a team is mathematically out of the title race?
Add a win for every game the team has left to its current points. If that total is still below the leader's current points, it cannot catch them. If it equals them, it can only finish level, and tiebreakers such as goal difference or head-to-head decide.
What is a clinch number?
The number of points the leader must win, or the chaser must drop, in any combination, to make sure the chaser cannot finish above it. A leader win counts in full; so does every point the chaser fails to take. When the two teams meet, one result can count on both sides at once.
Does it matter if the two teams still play each other?
Not for whether the chaser can catch the leader — its best case already includes winning that match, which is the leader's loss. It does matter for how quickly the race can be settled, because a leader win in that match adds to the leader's total and takes points from the chaser's maximum at the same time.
Can I use it for leagues with two points for a win?
Yes. Set points for a win to 2 for older league tables or competitions that still use it. The logic is the same; only the maximum changes.
