Hayden Roulston of HTC-Highroad joins RadioShack for 2012- Cycling News
National Road Race Champion, Hayden Roulston, confirmed that he will join the newly merged RadioShack-Nissan-Trek cycling team in 2012.
The two-time Olympic Games medalist, Roulston, decided to join one of the world’s leading professional road teams for brighter prospects in the upcoming events.
He is still able to chase his Spring Classics and wants to win the gold medal at the London Olympics in 2012.
Roulston told the media, “I’m really excited to finally confirm my future. This is a great move which enables me to have the best of both worlds and I can’t stress how important that is to me. I know I can be successful in both with a gold medal and a Classic
win sounding like a nice way to enjoy 2012”.
Roulston currently rides for HTC-Highroad. The team declared its demise by the end of this season.
He started his professional career with Cofidis Team in 2002 and bagged the first place in Pursuit and Madison Sydney. He secured third place in the National Road Race Championship in 2004.
In 2006, Roulston won the National Road Race title. He returned to the track to win numerous other titles at the Oceania and New Zealand track championships.
He joined HTC-Highroad in 2008 and won the overall Tour of Southland and the fourth and the sixth stage of Tour of Wellington.
He is New Zealand’s first rider to win a silver medal in individual pursuit and a bronze medal in team pursuit of Olympic Games.
He also grabbed the sixth stage of Tour of Denmark and the first stage of Vuelta a Espana in 2010.
Roulston is pleased to be linked with RadioShack and mentioned that he always wanted to join the team.
He was extremely excited and said, ”Riding for New Zealand and wearing that silver fern is so close to my heart and was a big part in discussions with Johan (Bruyneel, RSN team director)”.
RadioShack has already signed some of the biggest stars of cycling including, the Schleck brothers – Andy and Frank, Chris Horner and Fabian Cancellara.
Roulston will now be representing RadioShack for the coming season and will stay with the team until 2013. It will be interesting to see how he helps his new team in the coming events.
