Springbok’s Steyn hammers Italy

South Africa romped to a 55-11 points win over Italy in East London on June 26 in a match that was dominated by Springboks player, Morne Steyn.

Steyn had probably his best game in a South Africa shirt as he wracked up 26 points in total and put a smile on the face of perfectionist captain, John Smit. The world champions were dominant in all areas of the field and would have been too good for any team based on their strong showing.

There was tremendous variety in the way that Steyn played and his performance would have attracted him a great deal of attention. However, he insists it was just another game for South Africa and he won’t be getting carried away until he replicates this sort of performance consistently.

Italy tried extremely hard to try and make an impression on the game but they simply made too many mistakes, which cost them the game. South Africa exploited the gaps perfectly and used power and pace to burst through the lines and score with little trouble.

Steyn‘s kick won the day

There were many strings to Steyn’s bow in this game and he did a number of things very well to make an impression. His pace was extremely impressive and this allowed him to get through the Italy defence more than once.

He is also the best kicker in the Springboks side and he showed this with a virtually perfect kicking display. Had he not been able to kick so well then Italy would have been right back in the game and this part of Steyn’s performance may be over looked despite its importance.

Tactically Steyn was spot on because he got into better positions than anyone else in the side. This meant that when South Africa looked to attack, they passed the ball into areas where he would already be and where he would already be trying to get forward and score points.

The Springbok’s form on the field

South Africa’s form was very good and there are hardly any sides in the global game who would be able to match them at the moment. This will be very important for the coach, Peter de Villiers, who will want a perfect run of results in the build up to the World Cup next summer.

South Africa will be under a great deal of pressure to retain their World Cup and therefore it’s very important that they keep confidence high. The only way to do this is by winning matches, which keeps morale and performances on a constant level. South Africa’s seems to rarely, if ever dip.

This run of form is also very important to a number of players on the side. If they keep playing well then it means that South Africa are not making many changes to their team and this will give a few players belief in their ability and the desire to do more.

Advice for the fans

Don’t think twice about backing South Africa in their next few games because they are a very imposing unit to try and break down at the moment. They will have a huge belief and confidence that will get them through any potentially tricky match in the coming weeks as the World Cup and domestic seasons loom.

Stick with the consistent players in the side who are scoring the most points. Steyn is one of them and his confidence will be high at the moment. As kicker you can also be sure that he will always be on the score sheet in every match. This will make him a very good insurance bet to anything else you lay down because you know he will almost always top the scoring with his kicking alone.
