Marcos Maidana defeats Erik Morales in epic Las Vegas clash – Boxing News

Mexican national pride, Erik Morales, was beaten by the Argentinean legend, Marcos Maidana, for the interim World Boxing Association World Light Welterweight Title bout on Saturday night, 9 April.

Maidana won the WBA’s interim Super Lightweight title belt, in the event held at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States.

The Mexican boxer lost after a close majority decision, after he put up a great fight against his opponent. Two of the judges gave the scorecard in the favour of Maidana, while both boxers were able to score equally in the other one. Despite the fact that
Morales was not able to win this bout, the spirit showed by the Mexican was immaculate and has earned him respect all around the world.

Morales, who has been the former opponent of the best pound-for-pound boxer, Manny Pacquiao for a couple of times, proved his mettle against Maidana. Morales gave the Argentinean a tough time in the 12-round bout, showing that he is still a competitive fighter
at the welterweight division.

Erik Morales has been the World Champion on five occasions, since his debut in 1993 against Jose Orejel. The Mexican is still considered by many, as one of the finest boxers of his generation.

The 34-year-old Morales, has won 51 fights out of his 57 total professional bouts, of which he has won 35 by scoring a technical knockout. The current defeat was the seventh time Morales has lost in his impressive career.

It was expected that the selection of Morales as Maidana’s next possible challenger, will prove to be the hardest one for him as he is progressing in his career. The Argentinean light-welterweight boxer was coming to the ring after couple of defeats against
Amir Khan and Andriy Kotelnik, respectively. The Argentinean fought with great intent and was able to oust his opponent with his excellent footwork and hand speed.

After winning this bout, Maidana has expressed his feelings to go against Juan Manuel Marquez for his next fight. However, the boxing fans present at the MGM Grand Arena would definitely prefer a re-match against Morales.
