Euro Qualifier 2012 Player Ratings: Wales 0-2 England – Part 2

We looked at the Welsh team in part 1 and analysed the performances of each player. In part two we will look at the England team and see how their players fared in this all important Euro 2012 qualifier.

ENGLAND

Joes Hart: 6.0

It’s difficult to rate a player who wasn’t involved in the game at all. However, he did punch the ball once or twice so six seems the best possible rating.

Ashley Cole: 7.0

He was bullied by Bellamy during the first half but his class as a footballer showed as he made excellent forward forays and looked composed in defence throughout the ninety minutes.

Glen Johnson: 7.5

He enjoyed his time on the pitch as he had little to do defensively. His 60-yard pass for Young to set up the goal was easily the pass of the weekend. His overall game play and interlinking play with the midfielders was simply top-notch.

Michael Dawson: 6.0

It was an easy day at the office for the Spurs skipper as he was hardly tested throughout the match. He didn’t do much going forwards either.

John Terry: 7.0

Having the armband yet again put no pressure on the Chelsea man he is put on an assured display and didn’t give Wales a sniff. He looked like a man on a mission, although this one was too easy a mission.

Scott Parker: 8.0

The way he has been playing this season, he is probably the best central midfielder England has at the moment. His was deployed as a defensive midfielder and he adjusted brilliantly as he broke the play up nicely before distributing it. A classy and a composed
display by the 30-year old.

Frank Lampard: 6.5

A typical performance from Lampard as he went about doing his job with relative ease and dispatched the penalty in routine. An easy outing for the Chelsea man.

Jack Wilshere: 7.5

Jack of all trades? He certainly is. After playing as a defensive midfielder in Cardiff, he played in an attacking role as a no.10. He plays like a veteran and at times looks a class above the rest. His passing and movement was neat and tidy.

Ashley Young: 8.5

He is quickly becoming England’s main threat going forwards. It was another man of the match performance by the Villa man. He showed great awareness and technical ability throughout the game as he first won the penalty before setting up Bent to score the
winner. These performances are only going to bring his price tag even high.

Darren Bent: 7.0

He might not be everyone’s cup of tea but his predatory skills are working well with quality players around him, especially club mate Ashley Young. He again scored a typical poachers goal and has now got on the score sheet in his last three matches for the
National team.

Wayne Rooney: 6.5

He was asked to play on the left of a three man attack and this might be the first indication from Capello that he is ready to sacrifice Rooney’s position to suit the team, unlike before. However, he did not disappoint with a decent performance but it will
be interesting to see how he performs if this formation is kept against bigger sides.

SUBSTITUTES

Phil Jagielka: N/A

He came on for Parker with just 2 minutes left on the clock.

Stewart Downing: N/A

He too was a late substitute but almost got himself on the score sheet with a shot in 90th minute.

James Milner: 5.5

Played the last 20 minutes on the left but hardly made any significant contribution and looked out of place.
