England to face USA in historic Townsend Cup Trophy (Part Two)
The second instalment of this two-part series will discuss about players of English team and USA who are going to face each other on March 26 in Townsend Challenge Cup. The feature means to take away the attention from usual discussions, and concentrate
on polo pros who have achieved something of honour in their professional life.
Tommy Biddle
Biddle – the skipper of the USA Polo team in the Townsend Challenge Cup is a 9-goal handicap arena polo player. Biddle is the California based polo pro who dons the colours both types of sport – the grass and the soil-arena.
He conquered the Monty Waterbury Cup and East Coast Open respectively four and two times. He also clinched the USPA US Open Polo Championship while also named as captain of the troika in Townsend and Camacho Cup.
Billy Sheldon – USA Coach
A legendary name in the history of polo – Billy Sheldon is the second-generation polo pro who earned seven handicaps in the sport. California based polo star had clinched every significant tournament of the country. He won the US Arena Championship and USPA
National Sherman Memorial each four times. He rode away the field three times in National Arena Amateur Cup besides uncounted regional victories. He was also part of the team which contested FIP World Cup in 1998.
He was chosen as MVP Award in Townsend Challenge against England back in 2008 besides captaining the USA Team in the Bryan Morrison Cup.
England
Ryan Pemble
All time victorious around the world – Ryan Pemble has obtained six-goal handicaps in the sport of arena polo. He clinched victories in Royal Windsor, Warwickshire Cup, Gold Cup and Queens Cup in Untied Kingdom. He was also part of the Dubai Polo Team along
with Adolfo Cambiaso. He had also winning credit in the National Club Championships, Arena International Bryan Morrison Trophy, Arena Gold Cup and in International Trophy in South Africa. He was also chosen for MVP Award in Bryan Morrison Trophy.
Chris Hyde
Fabled name in the game of Polo – Chris Hyde is currently leading the Asprey Polo Team and famous in the world due to his long hitting drives and spot-shots. He is one of few polo pros who got nine-goal handicap in the form of arena polo. He was chosen in
the English team owing to his artistry game.
He lit the lamp five times in Arena Gold Cup and made the victories possible besides conquering St. Moritz Snow Polo World Cup on two occasions. He had also acquired triumphs twice in Barbados Open.
Sebastian Dawnay
Seven-goal handicap – Sebastian Dawnay is the son of legendary polo player and writer of Playmaker Polo and Polo Vision, Major Hugh Dawnay. He started playing polo at very early age and was remained part of many victorious squads. He clinched Gold Cup thrice
besides leading England against South Africa in 2006 and 2008. He was also part of the team which won Arena International against Scotland. He is currently working as Manager of the Royal Country Berkshire Polo Club based in England.
Tarquin Southwell – Coach
Coach of the English team – Southwell has had seven handicaps in his credit and started his professional career as player of the Ellerston. Despite junior player – he led the English team in St. Moritz and Dusseldorf.
He contended the Queens Cup thrice and made the victory possible for Black Bears against Ellerston White with go-ahead goal. Among his other victories, Princes of Wales Trophy, Gold Cup, France, Warwickshire Cups were prominent awards.
