Greg Chappell says Australia cannot waste talent like team India – Cricket News

National selector of the Australian cricket team, Greg Chappell has said that his country cannot afford to waste talent like team India does. He is of the view that the Indian team has a rich reserve pool but Australia cannot do the same.

Chappell said that India could afford to miss a few senior players due to some injuries or any other problem. Australia, he added, have a limited back-up pool and the side cannot afford to lose their top quality players.

The former Indian coach stated that senior players of Australia like Ricky Ponting, Michael Hussey and Simon Katich should play a mature role in the team, as the team demands consistency and transformation. He added that mature cricketers also guide new
players to perform well in team. These players should always try to unite all members of the team and play as one unit, he said.

Chappell said that the team needs players who can help the team to win more games. He added that old but inconsistent players should not be the part of the national cricket team.

The former cricketer admired senior Australian player Shane Watson, for his outstanding cricket sense and batting skills.

Chappell stated, “As long as they can bring something to the table, not only the runs or wickets, but the input they can have with the group, they are viable, but at some stage they won’t be, that is just a fact of life.”

The national selector is of the view that although the team in going through a transformation phase, it does not require many changes. He added that the captain of the Australian team has already been replaced.

He expressed, “We’ve got a new captain. Change isn’t just about personnel, it’s about attitude and intent and about tactics, and I’m sure Michael (Clarke) will bring different thought processes to the captaincy, and I think that is a positive thing.”

Chappell is hoping that the Australian team, who failed to prove their consistency in the recent ICC World Cup 2011, would work hard for the future matches.
