Bayern Munich’s Mario Gomez confident of Euro 2012 success with Germany

Bayern Munich striker, Mario Gomez, has voiced confidence in his team ahead of the Euro 2012, to be held in June, next year. He also expressed delight at leading his country against Ukraine this year in an international friendly.

While talking to reporters on Germany’s chances in the upcoming Euro 2012, Gomez reckoned that his team stands much better chance of overhauling the opponents like Holland and Spain compared to the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

He told that the DFB-Eleven have been in significant form this year and could better any opponents, may it be Spain or even Barcelona. He opined that the world champions, Spain, have lost their touch considerably and are certainly not the same as they were
a year and a half ago in South Africa.

Gomez added that Germany are one of the most feared teams around these days and are certain favourites to win the next year’s competition.

When asked about his captaincy experience in the game against Ukraine this year, the striker told that it is an honour to lead your country onto the field in front of a jam-packed stadium and it was definitely a lifetime experience.

However, the player wanted to focus entirely on his striking duties rather thinking of leading his side next year in Ukraine and Poland. He wished to see the regular skipper, Philipp Lahm, back amongst the ranks and also hoped for the successful and quick
return of midfielder, Bastian Schweinsteiger.

While talking to reporters, the former Stuttgart man further elaborated:

“I wouldn’t read too much into it. A large number of experienced and established players weren’t in the team that day, including players who have done an outstanding job as captain, such as Philipp Lahm and Bastian Schweinsteiger. That said, it’s a reward
and a recognition, and obviously I was very proud. “

“Not many players lead their national team out onto the field, especially not in football, because most captains keep the armband for years. So it was a great day for me, but nothing more than that.” Gomez concluded.

Germany have already ended this year, staying unbeaten and are considered hot favourites to lift the Euro 2012 crown next year.
