Two-Division World Champion Nonito Donaire signs with Golden Boy Promotions

Oscar de la Hoya, former Mexican-American boxer and the president of Golden Boy Promotions, announced the signing of an exclusive multiyear agreement with the Filipino-American professional boxer, Nonito Donaire, to its roster of fighters on Wednesday, 16
March.

Hoya proudly stated, “Nonito Donaire is one of the top boxers in the world today and we’re going to make sure he gets the chance to defend his world titles and stays as active as possible. The bantamweight division is becoming one of the most competitive
and exciting divisions in boxing and we look forward to promoting Nonito in great fights in the coming years.”

On a number of occasions, Nonito has been compared with Manny Pacquiao. Both belonging to the same Republic and moving up the ranks with the same pace and passion. The “Filipino Flash” feels very proud to be compared with the ‘Pacman’ because of what he
has achieved.

The 28-year-old American national is the former International Boxing Federation (IBF) and International Boxing Organization (IBO) World Flyweight Champion and currently the World Boxing Association (WBA) Interim World Champion in the Super Flyweight Division.
He has been titled by Ring Magazine as the “number four best pound-for-pound boxer in the world.”

A quick look at Nonito’s professional boxing record shows that he stands unbeaten since his loss on 10th March, 2001 in a fight against Rosendo Sanchez at the Pacific Sports Centre in the United States.

He has fought 27 professional fights in total, out of which he has won 26 bouts, with 18 wins by knockout and a lone loss. Interestingly he has no draws to his winning streak. This year, Nonita is going to defend his World Boxing Council (WBC) Bantamweight
Championship against Anselmo Moreno on 28 May at the Oakland Coliseum in California.

Prior to entering into an agreement with Golden Boy Promotions, Nonita was with the Top Rank promotional firm since 2008. The CEO of Top Rank, Bob Arum was the key person behind Nonito’s fights. Nonito said that he is very honoured to join Golden Boy Promotions
team and be among the big names of the sport. Adding to this Nonito also said that he is going to fight his heart out every time when he is in the ring because he wants to give his fans the fights that they really want to see.

When speaking to a sports news channel, Bob Arum bluntly said that his firm is not going to let Nonito walk away from this as he has a valid contract with Top Rank. So it is most likely that both Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank will face each other in
court very soon.
