Even though Roger Federer the former World number 1 lost his position to Rafael Nadal in the French Open, but still was awarded No. 1 seed for Wimbledon ahead of Rafael Nadal in a reverse of their world rankings. Roger Federer, the six times Wimbledon winner and also the defending champion received the top seed on Wednesday beating the current World No. 1 and rival Rafael Nadal. Federer lost his number 1 spot after he was defeated in the quarter finals by Robin Soderling in Paris. The Swiss will be looking to once again gain the number 1 spot in the World ranking by winning the Wimbledon title for the seventh time.
Wimbledon has its own ways to determine the players ranking in the tournament. It uses the judgment to seed players is based on their grass-court record. Federer in seven years have lost only two times on grass court with the total of 78 matches he played. As the seeding positions of Federer and Rafael Nadal are reversed from their current rankings, it would not be a problem and will not affect them as they will remain the leading seeds in their own halve of the draw. The draws for the Wimbledon will be held on Friday as the tournament will start from Monday June 21st and will be held for two weeks. Nadal had previously beaten Federer in the 2008 Wimbledon final but due to injury he missed the tournament next year and thus was not able to defend the title. The Spaniard at the moment is in his top form as he recently won his fifth Grand Slam title but later lost to Feliciano Lopez in the quarterfinals at Queen’s Club last week. Federer on the hand is missing his touch and doesn’t look in his top form. Federer the record 16 Grand Slam titles winner including this year’s Australian Open has not won a single title since his Australian Open’s success. Federer recent defeats include his quarter final lost against Robin Soderling in French Open and then later on from Lleyton Hewitt in Sunday’s final in Halle, Germany.
Novak Djokovic the Serbian professional tennis player is seeded No. 3 in Wimbledon followed by Andy Murray who received 4th spot in the ranking line up. The American no. 1 professional tennis player and the three times Wimbledon runner-up Andy Roddick placed at the number 5 ranking, whereas French Open finalist Robin Soderling who is two spots above Roddick’s ranking in tennis world was seeded No. 6. Two players were benefited by the Wimbledon seeding committee; Hewitt who was the 2002 Wimbledon champion and is currently ranked No. 26 in the world was seeded No. 15. On the other hand big-serving Ivo Karlovic was seeded up to No. 25 despite his current world ranking was 33rd.
In women’s corner the result was same for the top seed and no surprise was seen. The world number 1 in women ranking was surely seeded No. 1 followed by her sister Venus Williams at the No. 2 spot. The women’s seeding remains same to the world rankings, and it seems that this year it will be the fifth All-Williams final. Serena will defend his title this year as he defeated the former champion Venus last year for her third Wimbledon title. The only major upset that took place was withdrawal of No. 5 Elena Dementieva, due to her calf injury was not able to compete in the tournament. Therefore the No. 3 spot went to Caroline Wozniacki, followed by Jelena Jankovic at No. 4 and this year’s French Open champion Francesca Schiavone at No. 5. The No. 8 spot will be taken by the Belgians Kim Clijsters as she will be returning to Wimbledon after retirement followed by Justine Henin who will be at No. 17, respectively.
