Our seven time World champion Michael Schumacher seems to be bent on showing his rivals, and his fans, that he is not too old to be at the top of his game in formula one racing.

Born on 3rd of January 1969, the German driver started his career of Formula one racing in 1991. He made his debut with the Jordan Ford team as a replacement for Bertrand Gachot in the
Belgian Grand Prix. Being a Mercedes contract driver, Jordan was paid $150,000 for his debut by Mercedes. His best finish that year was with the Benetton Ford team when he finished ahead of the three times World champion Nelson Piquet.

In the 1994 season, only two years after the debut he won his first Driver’s championship. He succeeded in keeping the title to himself in 1995 as well becoming the youngest two-time world
champion in the history of Formula One racing. Then again, from the year 2000 to 2004 Schumacher, on his Ferrari, won more races and championships than anyone else in Formula one’s history. However, after an almost down season in 2005 and then again in 2006
he retired at the age of 37.

After substituting for injured Massa in 2009, in the European Grand Prix, Schumacher announced his return in 2010. Although the Formula one season last year didn’t prove to be quite good
for the old man, his test drives this year seem to be quite encouraging. Talking about his comeback he said, “Certainly it is not possible to turn back the biological clock. It is a fact that I am not absolutely the same now as I was 10 or 15 years ago. But
as to whether I am still good enough, I would say yes.”

Schumacher blamed his last year’s performance on the Mercedes car he drove. He said that the team was expecting Jenson Button to be at the wheel and it was built by the team when it was
known as Brawn.

He has rejected all suggestions stating him to be too old to be at the zenith of the sport. While some criticize his performance and blame it to his age, there are others who still idealize
the German racer. The world champion who is currently driving with the Red Bull, Sebastian Vettel, has stated him to be his role-model. Unlike many others who disapprove of his comeback, his German compatriot has backed the Formula One legend to return to
form this season.

“I always see him as a role-model and I think he is capable of achieving something big this season,” Vettel is reported to have said. “I hope that it will not be too big, if he is second
in the 2011 championships, that would be ok for me,” he said well humorously.

Despite the fact that he finished a ninth in last season while racing for Mercedes GP, he said that he is feeling “rather good” with the new season set to commence almost a month later
with the Australian Grand Prix on March 27.

“This season, I think we can aim for the podium and why not some Grand Prix wins,” said Schumacher. “But talk of the world title is still unrealistic.”
