Football Special Report: Top clubs of the season so far (Part 2)

Part 1 of this article can be read
here.

Manchester United

Love them or hate them, Manchester United are perennial giants of European football. Last season, Chelsea FC were in imperious form under Carlo Ancelotti as the Blues marched to a domestic double (FA cup and Premier League).

This season however, Chelsea have stuttered on domestic front leaving United clear favourites to land a record 19th English Premier League title. The Red Devils, true to their Champion mentality, remain contenders in every competition they set
their feet in. Where the likes of Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo put in talismanic performances in the season past, Dimitar Berbatov has broken free of his shackles and scored left, right and centre. Credit must to go Sir Alex Ferguson for the way he motivates
his troops and instilling that winning mentality into this players.

Manchester United are leading the Premier League table courtesy a superior goal difference albeit with two games to spare. In the Champions League, Red Devils sealed their progression with ease and are set to play Olympique Marseille in the knock-out stages.
Ferguson’s men have managed all this without even moving into top gear. It is often said that Manchester United play their best football after January. Should the case hold true for 2011, United faithful can dream of multiple silverware this season.

Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs were battling relegation as recently as 2008. Fast forward two seasons and Tottenham are in the Premier League top four and have also qualified for the Champions League round of 16 – amazing accomplishment indeed. Credit must be given where it’s deserved,
Harry Redknapp has done brilliantly well at White Hart lane.

Spurs, when in full flow, are a world class outfit and their wing play is a joy to behold. Gareth Bale – Tottenham’s player of the season so far – has come to age with a series of mesmerising performances, not least against Maicon in the Champions League.

Tottenham are outside bets for both the Premier League title and the Champions League. For a side that is not considered a traditional powerhouse, it’s an accomplishment to be proud of.

SS Lazio

SS Lazio are currently third in the league after 17 rounds of Serie A football. Going into second half of the season last year, Aquile statistics read: 15 played, 1 won, 7 drawn, 7 lost. Eduardo Reja has done miracles with the current crop of Aquile players.

Hernanes, the new import from South America, has been one of the best players in Peninsula. Should Aquile manage to keep up the good form going into second half of the season, Lazio will be playing European football in the later part of 2011.

AC Milan

Following their 2007 Champions League triumph, AC Milan have been underachieving on all fronts. Their results were not helped by the fact that Silvio Berlusconi refused to inject any money into an ageing squad.

This season however, Adriano Galliani pulled off some inspired signings; Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Robinho and Kevin-Prince Boateng, and that has made the world of difference. Going into second half of the season, AC Milan are leading Calcio charts by three points.
With the arrival of Antonio Cassano to San Siro, Milan are more than likely to win a Scudetto after six years of underachievement on domestic front.

Even though a Champions League triumph is highly unlikely – Rossoneri lack the defensive quality to mount a genuine challenge – Davioli can never be underestimated. Champions League is in AC Milan’s DNA – or so Galliani would like to believe.
