Barcelona’s Xavi praises La Roja captain Iker Casillas before record equalling match against England
Barcelona playmaker, Xavi Hernandez, is the latest big name to give his support to Spanish national team captain, Iker Casillas. The Real Madrid goalkeeper is on the brink of equalling Andoni Zubizarreta’s appearances for La Roja, feat he will achieve in
the friendly against England.
Xavi states that the experienced keeper is one of the pillars of La Furia Roja and hopes that he remains with the national team for many years to come. He stressed that Casillas is a special asset of the squad and he feels elated in his presence.
Since his debut in 2000, Casillas has made 125 appearances for Spanish national team, playing an important role in the successful campaigns of Euro 2008 and 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Xavi told reporters about their long time acquaintance and how they have grown as players despite featuring for rival clubs. The 31-year-old hailed Casillas’ talent and pointed out how he has stood out in extra-ordinary situations.
“We have shared good and not so good moments,” Xavi told reporters. “We have known each other since I was 15 years old.
“Iker has saved us from defeat on many occasions. Also in penalty shoot-out situations. When everything seems lost, he saves you. He gives us one extra credit, one extra life.”
Casillas has to be commended for his efforts to unite the national setup which is composed of many different identities, a fact that has not gone unnoticed by La Masia graduate.
“He is one of those players who unite a dressing room: he helps those who are next to him.”
The Barcelona man wants to continue in the Spanish setup after overcoming fitness problems and voiced his desire.
“To come to the national team is great and to be here for so many years is a reason to be proud,” Xavi added.
Iker Casillas and Xavi were recently honoured by UEFA for their consistent displays for the Spanish national team. Both players have represented their country in a century of matches and were given commemorative medals in this regard.
Barcelona sporting director, Andoni Zubizarreta, was the third footballer who was honoured by the European governing body.
Former Real Madrid striker, Raul Gonzalez was also included in the list of gentlemen to receive the medal but declined due to prior arrangements with current club Schalke.
