Manchester United rocked by Wayne Rooney suspension

A big blow came for Manchester United when Wayne Rooney was given a two match suspension, from this weekend, by the English PA for using foul language. Manchester United’s euphoria, from the 4-2 win, came to an end upon hearing the sad news of their
main striker. After the win, Rooney uttered some words that were inappropriate to the broadcasting camera.

England’s international player was quick to realise his mistake and instantly offered a written apology. He later claimed that he did not intend to abuse anyone and it was just the heat of the moment that got the bitter of him. Rooney insisted that
the words were uttered merely out of frustration and were not aimed at anyone.

However despite his apology, FA issued a statement that clearly stated that Rooney has been charged for using foul language.

The statement read, “The FA has charged Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney for the use of offensive, insulting and/or abusive language. This charge relates to an incident during his side’s fixture with West Ham United at the Boleyn Ground on Saturday
April 2, 2011. Rooney has until 6pm on April 5 to respond to the charge.”

Rooney will miss the next weekend’s game against Fulham on Saturday and the second match against Manchester City, which is also the semi-final of the FA Cup in Wembley.

The ban issued by FA is believed to be an unprecedented incident in English football history. Never before has a player been fined for swearing into the camera.

Didier Drogba, the Chelsea striker, was charged with a three-match ban and suspended for two more games by UEFA. The offense was a similar one back in 2009 Champions League semi-final. Chelsea was playing against Barcelona and Drogba’s comments were
aimed at the referee.

According to FA rules there is a provision for such punishment. The rule states that any individual should at all times act in best interest of the game. And not at any moment is he allowed to indulge himself in an act that would bring disrepute to
the game or anyone else. The rule also states that violent conduct, series of foul play , abusive language, threatening anyone, or use of indecent of abusive words can result in suspension or a ban.

The hat-trick by Rooney helped Manchester United beat West Ham United by 4-2 after being 2-0 down in the first half. United managed to get all the three points and maintain their dominance on top of the table in English Premier League.

The match was being telecasted around the globe by Sky Sports and comments made by Rooney directed at the camera were also televised.

Rooney has always had a problem with his temper ever since he was a teenage prodigy at Everton. Since coming under the wings of Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, Rooney is believed to have calmed down to a great degree. However, this recent outburst
may end up costing United dearly. It happened last year when Rooney’s injury in the Champions League quarter-final conceded the title to Chelsea by losing the virtual title decider.
