Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez aims big loan signings – EPL News

Wigan Athletic boss, Roberto Martinez has confirmed that he is aiming to lure big stars on loan spells to DW Stadium for the upcoming 2011/12 Barclays Premier League season.

Martinez has vowed to increase the depth and the quality of his current squad that escaped relegation from the League on the very last day. The Latics marked a historic victory over Stoke City on the last day of the Premier League to secure their spot for the next Barclays Premier League campaign. Wigan are now looking to strengthen their squad to prevent relegation from the English Top flight football.

Roberto Martinez has confirmed that he is looking to bring players on loans spells and have revealed that he is monitoring his potential targets for the past six months.

Martinez said, “The big loan signings, the players we're looking at bringing in, we've been following them for the past six months really. We have a clear idea of who we want next season's loans to be.”

Martinez signed Bolton Wanderer’s goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi and Manchester United’s midfielder Tomas Cleverly both on loan last season. Both of the loan players were an immediate hit at the DW Stadium and proved vital in Wigan’s survival battle.

Ali Al-Habsi was a revelation at Wigan Athletic. The Omani goalkeeper went to establish himself as club’s first choice keeper and won plaudits for his outstanding performances. Al-Habsi also won Wigan Athletic’s Player of the season for his consistent and influential displays throughout the last season.

Wigan Athletic are allowed to sign only two players on loan from the Premier League clubs and Roberto Martinez wants to be spot on with his signings.
He said, “The only limitation we have is that we only have two loans from the Premier League, and we have to be spot on with those. Anyone can spot a good player, but whether they are good characters as well - and right for your football club - is much harder.”

Wigan are likely to sign Ali Al-Habsi permanently from Bolton Wanderers and Tomas Cleverly is also likely to join the Latics on loan for the next season.
