Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Mikel Pollitt signs one year extension - EPL News

Wigan Athletic veteran goalkeeper Mike Pollitt has penned a new deal that will see him stay at the DW Stadium for the 12 months despite losing the first team berth to Ali Al-Habsi last season.

Mike, who is Latics’ one of the longest serving players, will be at the DW Stadium for the seventh consecutive season. The former Manchester United custodian previous deal expired at the end of the last campaign.

It was being believed that the 39-year-old goalkeeper will finally draw curtain on his career as Mike has also revealed that he wanted to pursue career in coaching role. However, it came as a shock when the Latics offered him contract extension and he accepted  his tenure at the DW Stadium to  Wigan goalkeeper Mike Pollitt has agreed a new 12-month contract to extend his stay at the club into a seventh year.

However, Mike’s role at Wigan Athletic in the next season will be to deputise the Latics new signing and highly rated Omani International goalkeeper, Ali Al-Habsi.

Wigan Athletic splashed more than £3m to sign Ali Al-Habsi from Bolton Wanderers after the Omani international hugely impressed during his loan spell at the DW Stadium last season.

Roberto Martinez now has four goalkeepers in his ranks and is happy to secure the services of Pollitt. The Latics manager hailed Mike’s impact at Wigan Athletic and reckons that the English goalkeeper’s experience will be very vital in the next season.   

Martinez said, “Mike is a terrific goalkeeper first and foremost with great experience and he continues to set standards on a daily basis that the younger players can follow.”

Martinez was impressed by the patience shown by Pollitt after the English keeper was dethroned by Ali Al-Habsi. Wigan’s manager believes Mike is very committed to the club and said, “He has been patient during his time at the club but has never been anything less than totally professional and committed to the club.”

Mike has also expressed his contentment over signing a new deal with the Latics. Although he revealed his desire to develop as coach but he believes that he can still offer to his team and is determined to repay the faith shown by Latics manager.

Mike told Wigan Athletic official website, “I'm 39 now, approaching my seventh season at the club and although I am keen to develop as a coach at some stage right now I'm focused on the playing aspect of the game because I feel I've still got plenty to offer to the team given the opportunity.”

Mike Pollitt was signed from Rotherham United in 2005 and has played 36 matches for the Latics during his six years spell at DW Stadium.
