The Italian Fencers return from Sheffield after The 2011 European World Fencing Championships – Fencing News:
After the tremendous victories during The 2011 European World Fencing Championships from July 13 to July 19, the blue squad has left Sheffield and will reach its home country today.
The Italian Fencing Federation has announced holidays for some days for athletes and coaches before returning to work in preparation for the next championships. The 2011 Catania World Championships is the next championship event that will be taken place
from October 8 to October 16 this year.
The blue squad have shown a remarkable performance during the 2011 European World Fencing Championships which are on file reiterated Italy's leadership in the continental shields. There are very major changes occur in the National and World Rankings of all
the Fencing categories after the championships. The Blue squad not only took the lead in the Championship rankings but also captured several medals both in normal and Paralympic events. These victories have contributed a lot for blue squad towards the qualification
for the 2012 London Olympic Games.
The Heads of Delegation of Italian Fencing Federation, Andrea Cipressa and Paul Azzi gave his comments about European Championships. Cipressa said, "We will remember Sheffield, not only by the number of medals, but for the overall success of Italy in this
Azzi spoke about the success of the Blue squad, “Behind every victory, there is the work of the athletes and teachers, clubs, athletic trainers, as well as medical staff and the entire Federal Secretariat. In Sheffield, we have in fact also excelled off
the mat. We looked at and carefully observed by other federations for our organization.”
The Blue squad captured total ten medals in the able-bodied Fencing including six gold medals, two silver and two bronze medals. The Individual two gold medals were conquered by the Men’s Foil fencer, George Avola and Women’s Foil fencers Elisa Di Francisca.
The Paralympic Blue Squad also won six medals including three silver and three bronze medals. In this way, the Italian team is returning to its home country with amazing 16 medals. There victory is showing that Italian fencers are going to attain more than
it during 2011 Catania World Fencing Championships in October.
