  • The Australian Open top seed pick

Australian Open, Nadal and Wozniacki rated the Top seed.

No surprises came from the organizers of the first major event of the season, the Australian Open, as they have no discretion over the seeding. Instead, the pick was made purely to the World ranking, as the Spaniard Rafael Nadal and Danish Caroline Wozniacki, holding a number of their world rankings, have been designated as the top seeded of the first stage of the Grand Slam season, kicking off Monday in Melbourne.

It should also be considered thata the Australian Open is currently the only grand slam title, Nadal doesn’t hold.

According to the seeds list released on Thursday, the reigning champion and 16-time Grand Slam winner, Roger Federer is the number two seeded. Federer, after his triumph in the final with the Scot Andy Murray in last year’s final for his fourth title in the season-opening Grand Slam, will then lead the men’s singles, followed by Novak Djokovic of Serbia, the 2008 champion. Finally, the Swedish star Robin Soderling and Britain’s Andy Murray round out the top five.

The defending women's singles champion Serena Williams, who has won four of the past six titles and ranked fourth in the world, announced her withdrawal from the tournament due to her foot surgery in October. Her sister Venus Williams, therefore, was seeded fourth as the world's fifth-ranked women's singles player.

Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki will seek the title among women, without any threat from the defending champion, the American Serena Williams. The Russian Vera Zvonareva, the runner-up at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open last year, was named second seed followed by U.S. Open champion, the Belgian Kim Clijsters. The other Belgian Justine Henin, a finalist last year, is credited as the blue of the number six seeded Francesca Schiavone, Flavia with Pennetta instead to the 22nd place.

China's top player Li Na, who achieved her personal best by reaching the semifinals, last year, has been seeded ninth while the other Chinese semifinalist, Zheng Jie gave up this year's tournament in order to recover from a wrist surgery.

The draw will be held at Melbourne Park on Friday. And then latter, the tournament runs from 17th January till 30th January.
