Sri Lanka set India target of 275 in the World Cup final

Sir Lanka led by a brilliant hundred by Mahela Jayawardene posted a formidable total of 274 for the loss of 7 wickets at the end of their quota of 50 overs. India have the measure of Lankans for most part of the innings, and did not let them get away till the final few overs.  Indian attack was on the mark right from the onset.  Zaheer Khan also became the highest wicket taker in the world cup alongside Shahid Afridi by getting to 21 wickets.

The nerves and the noise in Wankhede Stadium seemed to get the better of the two captains at the toss, as for the first time the toss in a world cup final was done twice. In the end Kumar Sangakara won the toss and elected to bat first. The most successful opening partnership of the world cup between Upul Tharanga and Tillakaratene Dilshan could not make the same impact in the big game.  Zaheer Khan and Sreesaanth used the new ball well and did not let the two Lankans get away in the first few overs. The pressure got the better of Tharanga and he was out for just 2 off the bowling of Zaheer Khan.  Kumar Sangakara came in at number three and knew that if ever there was a captains knock was needed it was on the big day. Sangakara and Dilshan negated the new ball and put on a solid stand of 43 runs.  Dilshan was dismissed for 33 runs from 49 balls with 3 fours. He was out bowled by Harbhajan Singh while trying to sweep. It was the turn of two most senior men in the team to show their mettle. Just like Arjuna Ranatunga and Arvinda De Silva did back in 1996 final against Australia. Sri Lanka were going steadily but the scoring rate was not much to brag about.  Sangakara and Jayawardene put on 62 for the 3rd wicket. Sangakara was dismissed for 48 runs off the bowling of Yuvraj Singh.Thilan Samaraweer added 21 runs before being out LBW to Yuvraj Singh. Chamara Kapugedara came in and left or just one run.  Fast bowler Nuwan Kulasekara was in next and gave Jayawardene good support.  The pair got Sir Lankan innings on the right track by lifting the run rate. The two added 66 runs for the 6th wicket.  Jayawardene completed his magnificent hundred and made sure Sri Lanka went past 270.  The final is setup well for a perfect finale and India well have to bat well to win the World Cup final to get the target of 275.
