Spain defeats Australia’s Kookaburras by 2-1 at the Four-Nation tournament in Monchengladbach, Germany

The Spanish men defeated their Australian counterparts by 2-1 at the Four-Nation tournament, played at Monchengladbach, Germany. Despite of the win the Spanish men could only manage to finish their campaign at Four-Nation event by securing second spot after the Netherlands due to a less good goal difference.

"It is a pity not to have managed to win the Four Nations. Of course we always want to win, but we stayed with the team has progressed in this tournament and has reached a good intensity during games, has grown into the defensive system and improved the effectiveness in attack,” Dani Martin, the Spanish coach stated about his team’s performance in the tournament.

Having lost two friendly matches against the same Australian side at their home soil the Spanish side played wonderfully in recording the victory over the Kookaburras.

"I want to continue with the same intensity in friendly matches and continue to grow in defense and attack. In addition, we will face either Belgium, because you have not played them,” Martin, the Spanish coach stated about his team’s upcoming fixtures.

Although the Kookaburras took early lead but the Spanish athletes scored the equaliser before the interval while the Spanish made their winning strike in the second half.

The first half started with a great action by the Australians when they took the early lead in the 7th minute, thanks to Matthew Butturini who put his team ahead of their rivals by scoring a stunner. The Kookaburras also had their chances after that but those chances were narrowly missed. On the other side the Spanish men too tried hard to find their way to the Australian net and they became successful in the 25th minute when Roc Oliva made the equalising effort. The first half ended at 1-1 to both teams.

The second half was also full of action but this time the thrill was created by the Spanish as they scored the winning goal three minutes into the second half when Roc Oliva scored the winner in the 38th minute after a missing a close opportunity a minute earlier.

The two teams had created some wonderful chances after that but the chances remained the mere chances and could not be converted into goals. The Kookaburras also came across their final opportunity in the final minute of the game when they were awarded a penalty corner but the shot was well saved by Spain and the match concluded at the same score, which is at 2-1 to Spain.
