Sharapova eases through along ASB Classic

The first round match in the Auckland Classic women’s tennis tournament Monday disposed the Italian qualifier, Alberta Brianti when the top seed Maria Sharapova topped her in straight sets.

There was a last minute change of plan as initially Sharapova was supposed to play the Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro in this first round match. But the fifth-seed Anastasija Sevastoya of Latvia with-drew because of illness leading a re-shuffle to the draw.

Brianti qualified to be the last-minute addition to the game playing against Maria Sharapova. Since playing the final round of qualifier this morning, Brianti was given a bit more recovery time, shifting Sharapova’s match down the order.

The match began in thrilling fashion but commenced in less than 90 minutes as Sharapova overcame Brianti 6-2 6-3 very quickly. Brianti did give the world top seed a tough competition in the second set saving four match points.

Sharapova considered the Italian, a motivated opponent as the three-time Grand Slam champion and a former World No. 1 commented that she enjoyed a good work-out in her first match in three months.

“I thought I could have closed it out a bit sooner, but she definitely pushed me and I guess I wanted to play a few more games.” said the Russian, “I thought she played a really solid match, got a lot of balls back and, from my perspective, it was good.”

Biranti was called as the “lucky loser” and a reign of the draw, to be put against Sharapova, when the tournament fifth-seed Anastasija Sevastova with-drew. Sharapova’s original first-round opponent, Carla Suarez Navarro was then elevated to eighth-seed with this with-drawl.

After winning this round one match and proceeding to round two, Sharapova will now meet unseeded Czech Renata Voracova. Voracova bounced back from a slow start in her match against Lourdes Dominguez when she finally beat the Spaniard.

The two shall play the match on Wednesday facing each other for the second time. Sharapova won the first, 6-3 7-5 as she qualified at the Australian Open back in 2003.

The Russian shall certainly be delighted to have a winning start at the 2011 campaign.
