Part 1: How the Spanish La Liga turned out last weekend

The Spanish La Liga took a new turn after the last weekend’s fixtures. The big two did not suffer a loss; however, there were a few changes in the mid table after a few unexpected wins, draws and losses.

Real Madrid won their game from the third placed Villarreal side. Villarreal looked to be positive as they entered the Santiago Bernabeu but the heroic acts of Cristiano Ronaldo helped the Los Blancos take another win so they can still remain in the race to the Spanish La Liga title. Real Madrid won the game 4-2 at home and that means that Barcelona still have to wait for a week to be called as winter champions. On the other hand, Valencia won their weekend clash and as Villarreal suffered a loss, they moved only two points behind them on the fourth spot.

During the weekend clash between Real Madrid and Villarreal, the visiting side pushed Madrid really hard. The first half performance by the visitors totally shook the Santiago Bernabeu. They went on to lead the game twice as Cani and Ruben scored two goals one after the other to first lead the game 0-1 and later 1-2. However, a hat-trick by Cristiano Ronaldo and the first goal of the season by Ricardo Kaka helped the team win the game 4-2 at home. Cani was shown a red card towards the end of the game as he threw the bottle and Jose Mourinho while sitting on the bench.

Later, the Villarreal boss Juan Carlos Garrido was also sent off from the sidelines and in respect to this he commented:

“Referees are always very conditioned by being here and are afraid of making a mistake against Madrid –I think we deserve the same respect.”

With this defeat suffered by Villarreal, Valencia took advantage. The fourth placed side defeated Levante 0-1 while being away from home and with that win they moved only two points behind Villarreal at the fourth spot. Now Valencia have the opportunity to reach the third spot of the Spanish La Liga. Valencia were about to draw the game; however, a late goal from Mata helped them take all three points. The Spanish striker missed a penalty earlier on and was having quite an off night but his late goal helped the team gain momentum in the Spanish La Liga.

Valencia showed great form at the start of the season and they were at the top of the table. However, after being defeated 1-2 at the Nou Camp from Barcelona, they really couldn’t find their feet back on the ground and it was hard for them to continue their great form. However, they are back in touch with their outstanding style of football and they are definitely going to try to make it to the third position in the Spanish La Liga so they can confirm their position in the UEFA Champions League.

The other Barcelona team, Espanyol are doing extraordinary in the Spanish La Liga this season. They did not really have an outstanding last season but this year they are performing better than the last few seasons. The finally got back to winning ways and after they were defeated 1-5 by Barcelona, they found the goal scoring form this weekend. The Barcelona side were to face Real Zaragoza in a Spanish La Liga fixture and they won the game 4-0 at home.
