Pakistan Cricket Team Arrives in Chandigarh: Breaking News

The Pakistani cricket team has arrived in Chandigarh amidst tight security, ahead of their semi-final clash against hosts India on 30th March. The whole area had been fortified by the police and intelligence officials detailed on the security of the visiting team.

Afridi’s men will be holding a practice session today at the Punjab Cricket Association stadium, which is 12 km from Chandigarh. The team will practice under the strict eye of the security forces.

Speaking to the media, the SSP Chandigarh (Security), H. S. Doon said, “Nearly 1,000 cops have been deployed for the safety of the teams and officials. We are not taking any chances with the security and even the teams have been asked to strictly adhere to the guidelines.”

Doon added that the Pakistani team management has been as asked to inform the security personnel four hours before any team member want to visit anywhere after leaving the hotel. Officials also confirmed that security would be provided to the Pakistani fans coming from the neighbouring country, to watch the knockout event in India.

Earlier on Thursday, it was revealed that a serious terrorist plot was foiled by the co-operation of intelligence agencies from Pakistan, Maldives and Sri Lanka. Terrorists had planned to attack the venues and teams taking part in the ICC World Cup 2011. The event sparked an increased threat of a terrorist attack in India for the remaining matches of the tournament, stepping-up security measures.

The Mohali cricket stadium has been totally sealed to avoid the entry of any unauthorized personnel. Approximately 2,000 policemen would be posted in and around the semi-final venue on match-day to ensure a safe match.

India ousted defending champions Australia in the second quarter-final to earn a place in the semi-final, while Pakistan beat the West Indies by 10 wickets in the first quarter-final of the mega tournament.  Both sides are confident going into the semi-final, after playing well in their previous games. The arch rivals will face each other for a place in the final, set to be played on 2nd April in Mumbai.
