Nightmare for Houston Dynamo: Jesse Marsch picks Brian Ching for Montreal Impact in Expansion Draft

The 2011 Major League Soccer Expansion Draft provided Jesse Marsch with an opportunity to gather some of the best players in the league to reinforce Montreal Impact’s roster for 2012 MLS season.

The availability of Houston Dynamo’s lead goal scorer and skipper Brian Ching was exactly what the Impact needed from the draft. Ching was left exposed by head coach Dominic Kinnear in the draft, much to everybody’s surprise, despite his years-long services to Texas-based outfit since their inception in 2006.

“We value Brian,” confirmed Marsch after the announcement. “He’s a great goal scorer and has great experience, including in the World Cup. There’s certainly a lot of respect for him.”

Ching made public his intentions before the 2011 play-offs that he will retire from active play after concluding the 2011 season. However, he postponed his decision prior to the MLS Cup final against Los Angeles Galaxy.

Montreal boss respected Ching’s ambition to continue his career with the Dynamo but insisted on strengthening his new Canadian outfit. Ching will the Impact’s blazing weapon in the attack when they undertake the 2011 campaign.

“He’s made it clear that he doesn’t want to be here,” Marsch told the media. “I want to include what’s best for Brian in his future, but I also have to consider what’s best for our club. We looked at this list, and we tried to get the best out of it.”

However, according to Marsch, the final decision is for Ching’s to make, whether he wants to stay at the Dynamo or otherwise.

Ching scored five goals this season becoming the top goal scorer at Die Oranje. But his injury prone health hindered his performance throughout the 2011 season.

Ching is one of the few original Dynamo players who Kinnear brought with him when he moved from San Jose Earthquakes to Texas to conceive Houston Dynamo in 2006.

Should Ching deny the move from Houston to Montreal, the second best choice for the Canadian outfit will be Philadelphia Union’s 22-year-old striker Freddy Adu. Adu has worked under Marsch at the US national camp in 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
