Nick Swisher to respect Andy Pettitte’s decision to retire

New York Yankees right-fielder Nick Swisher has extended his support to team-mate Andy Pettitte, saying he will understand if the left-handed pitcher decides to retire.

Swisher was in Manhattan recently, attending the Thurman Munson Awards gala. The outfielder spoke to the media about Pettitte’s possible exit, this year.  He said that if Pettitte decided to hang his cleats, he would have every right to do so.

“I love Andy Pettitte more than anything, not only as a person but as a player as well,” Swisher said. “I know that if he chooses to ride off into the sunset, he’s earned that. We would love to have him back, but if he’s gonna go, he’s gonna go with glory.”

Like the rest of his teammates, Swisher hopes Pettitte stays, but believes the team has enough strength to compete for a World Series title, with or without Pettitte.

Meanwhile, there still isn’t any word on Pettitte’s decision to pitch this season. The general manager of the club, Brian Cashman, is still scanning the market for a direct insertion of experience in the pitching squad.  He has told his team not to expect the thirty-eight year to pitch in 2011.

“He's made a decision. It's just if he changes his mind,” Cashman said. “I wouldn't even say he's undecided. He's decided not to play. If he decides to play, I think that's the rub.”

The New York Yankees are looking for a pitching boost, given their current rotation woes. With the spring training kick-off just a few days away, there’s a possibility that there won’t be new blood entering the frame anytime soon.

Carsten Charles Sabathia will lead the pack of pitchers, while the two young stars- Phil Hughes and Ivan Nova may lack composure for the coming season. With Allan James Burnett being the only other senior in the squad, Pettitte’s role will be greatly missed.
