Miroslav Klose and Mario Gomez vie for starting action against Hoffenheim

Louis van Gaal, the manager of Bundesliga’s reigning champions Bayern Munich, is going to face a selection dilemma for his side's upcoming encounter against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, as both his strikers, Mario Gomez and Miroslav Klose are eager to pick a spot in the starting action. Gomez has been in exceptional form this season as he scored 16 goals in 19 league matches.

On the other hand, Klose scored his 59th international goal in his 106th match for his national side in Wednesday’s stalemate against Italy despite being a regular benchwarmer at Munich this season.

Van Gaal will be looking to bag all three points at Allianz Arena and get back on track after last week’s shocking 3-2 defeat at the hands of relegation candidates FC Cologne.

Even the most pessimistic of Die Rotten fans would not have expected their side to go down after having a 2-0 lead at the half time. Bundesliga title holders are currently placed fifth in the league table, trailing league leaders Borussia Dortmund by a huge margin of 15 points. Die Rotten will be hoping to claim a second placed finish, as a successful title defence looks rather farfetched.

The 25-year-old Gomez sustained an injury to his left knee during last week’s loss at Rhien Energy Stadium. However, the striker’s injury was not serious in nature. Latest reports indicate that Gomez has fully recovered from the knock after four days of rest. On the other hand, the 32-year-old Klose is determined to earn his spot in the Borussians starting line-up. Klose’s contract with the Bavarian club is going to run out in the summers and the forward wants to play as much as possible for Bayern Munich before he bids farewell to the giants of European football.

Klose’s goal scoring performance against Italy would have brought smiles to van Gaal. The Die Rotten tactician might look to start Klose alongside Thomas Muller in the upcoming home game. The two displayed excellent chemistry against Italy. Klose was a constant presence in the Italian penalty area, Muller complemented him perfectly by drifting to the flanks, drawing defenders along with him. Their interplay would not have gone unnoticed by van Gaal.

Furthermore, Gomez has just returned from an injury layoff and van Gaal would want his in-form goal scorer to regain full fitness for the critical Champions League tie against Inter Milan; Bayern Munich are set to play the Italians in the knock-out stage of the Champions League on Wednesday. With Bundesliga title race already looking like a lost battle, risking Gomez for this game will be a folly on the manager’s part.
