Mario Gomez pleased he stayed at Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez says that he is pleased with his decision to remain with the defending Bundesliga champions.

The Germany international had looked to be on his way out of Bayern to join English Premier League side Liverpool after achieving huge success in his first season with the Bavarians.

He helped the club to claim the German league title, DFP-Pokal Cup and to reach the UEFA Champions League final, but could not inspire the club to an historic treble as they were beaten by Serie A giants Inter Milan.

Liverpool and Bayern have both struggled this season in their respective leagues, so Gomez' decision to stay appears to have been moot on paper, but he has established himself as his club's first-choice striker and could hardly be happier as he tries to help Bayern push back up the league and into title contention.

According to German publication Bild, Gomez said: "I am really happy with the situation at the moment, and that is also down to the fact that I stayed with Bayern. I was told back then in that talk that they had faith in me and that I would get my chance. That is exactly what I worked towards. At the moment, we are seeing a Mario Gomez who is currently in very good form."

The in-form 25-year-old has netted 16 goals in 20 games across all competitions for Bayern this season, with his most recent strike coming in the 4-1 victory over Eintracht on Saturnday 27 November, in a display which drew plaudits from Bayern coach Louis van Gaal.

Gomez reacted positively to his manager's comments, saying: “I am pleased about that since the coach's faith is always very important.”

Despite Gomez' good form, Bayern are currently sitting in fifth place in the Bundesliga, 14 points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund.
