Manchester City eye Juan Manuel Vargas

Manchester City are reportedly targeting Juan Manuel Vargas, the 27-year-old Fiorentina winger. Even after spending astronomical amounts in both the transfer windows, City are struggling to keep hold of fourth place in the English Premier League.

It is reported that they are preparing once again to spend in the upcoming summer transfer window at the end of the season to strengthen their squad. Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini has been keeping an eye of Vargas and has been impressed with his performance this season.

A local Italian newspaper claimed that talks between the two sides over Vargas had already taken place and that the English Premier League side were willing to spend an estimated £17.4 million on the Peruvian winger. However, La Liga giants Barcelona are also keeping a close watch on Vargas and might present City with competition over the versatile player.

Vargas was heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid but ended up signing for Fiorentina in the summer of 2008 for a fee of €12 million. He did not win over the fans as he was being made to play as a left back when he was meant to play as an attacking midfielder. With the change in position, the Peruvian became an important part of the team.

Since then he has made 56 appearances for Fiorentina and has managed to find the back of the net some eight times. He has the unique ability of being able to play as a left-back, winger or as a midfielder but prefers to play as an attacking midfielder, almost as a third forward.

Liverpool to make a move for Fernando Gago

English Premier League sides Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Everton are preparing to battle it out for Real Madrid midfielder Fernando Gago. The Argentine international has not been able to secure a place in the first team since the arrival of Jose Mourinho.

Having only made 7 appearances this season, the 24-year-old is reportedly looking for a move away for the possibility of regular first team football. He has recently been linked with Premier League sides Liverpool, Tottenham and Everton, all of whom are determined to sign the player at the end of the season.

So far Liverpool, under Kenny Dalglish, are favourites to sign Gago, who would most likely serve as a replacement for Steven Gerrard. The Liverpool skipper is close to retirement and is currently out with an injury which will see him missing most of the remainder of the season.

They will still face stiff competition from Tottenham and Everton, who are also in dire need of experienced midfielders. The La Liga side could ask for as much as £10 million for Gago and will most likely let the Argentinean leave in the summer if their price is met.
