Luis Martins reminds me of Fabio Coentrao, says Benfica coach Jorge Jesus – Primeira Liga News

Benfica coach, Jorge Jesus, claims that Luis Martins reminds him of Portuguese star, Fabio Coentrao. The left-back parted ways with the club in the summer and since then no player has made the position their own, however the tactician reiterates that he sees Coentrao’s qualities in the youngster.

The Reds have suffered with the departure of Fabio Coentrao, who used to be the undoubted starter at the backing during his time at the club.

Benfica acquired the services of Emerson and Joan Capdevila to counter his absence, however the duo haven’t exactly performed to the calibre of the Seleccao International.

Capdevila has been labelled as flop at Estadio da Luz and has hardly featured for Jorge Jesus’ side since his transfer from Villarreal.

While Emerson has been better than the Spaniard, he has been unable to muster control over his emotions and is currently facing a ban for his red card suffered in the last UEFA Champions League game.

With Capdevila unable to take part in the prestigious European competition due to his failure to register his documents on time, Jorge Jesus has been stretched thin for the clash against FC Basel and is likely to field a make-shift wingback on the left.

Miguel Vitor is one who has been drafted in that position before and could be in contention for a place in the starting line-up. Maxi Pereira can also play as a left-back but he is likely to retain his place on the right.

With a lack of options, the Benfica coach held special praise for Luis Martins, who graduated through the youth ranks at the club and is now pressing for action in the first team as a left-back.

Speaking to reporters, Jesus, said that the 19-year-old had long been groomed into a defender for the Eagles and possessed some of the qualities for which Fabio Coentrao was famous for.

"Luis Martins is a young man, who we have been working on for tomorrow. He may even play in the game. He is a player who realizes what we want defensively. He has the intensity and acceleration of Fabio Coentrao,” he said.

The manager also revealed that tomorrow’s fixture was a crucial one and required a lot of responsibility, something which might cause to him to field more experienced players such as Miguel Vitor or Maxi Pereira.

“Tomorrow’s game is important and requires a large degree of responsibility but young people can play in them. Miguel Vitor and Maxi Pereira are my other alternatives,” Jorge Jesus was quoted as saying.

While he is unlikely to be in the starting line-up tomorrow, Luis Martins is an exciting prospect for the future and is likely to be utilized by Benfica over the course of the season.
