Luis Figo: I felt grandfatherly in Spain & Arsenal in the market for Rea Madrid’s Pepe

Luis Figo the former Portuguese captain who played for both Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona, has said that older players are more valued in Italy compared to Spain.

The midfielder had spent five years at Barcelona from 1995 to 2000 and later moved to Real Madrid in a very controversial move. He stayed at Real till the end of 2005 before moving to Inter Milan. He won every possible trophy in club football during his ten years in Spain.

However in 2005 when he turned 32 , he felt unwanted and after moving to Italy played four more seasons with Inter before calling it a day in 2009.

Figo is working in a directorial capacity at Inter Milan, and believes that Italian football values the experience of older players and appreciates them.

Figo said : "The last two years at Madrid were not good, not only for me but for the whole team. It was time for a new chapter.

"Furthermore, in Spain, one is treated like a grandfather when he passes the age of 30. Italy is much different, there is much more appreciation for experience."

Figo was part of the Madrid team that had the best players from all round the world, and the team was known as ‘Galacticos’. That featured stars like Zinaden Zidane , David Beckham, Raul Meriles, Ronaldo form Brazil and few others.

Figo won two league titles, two Spanish super cups, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and Intercontinental Cup with Real Madrid.  The Portuguese also won four Serie A titles with Inter Milan, Coppa Italia and three Supercoppa Italiana trophies.

Staying in Spanish football , there are reports that English Premier League club Arsenal are looking to sign Madrid’s Portuguese defender Képler Laveran Lima Ferreira also known as Pepe.

Arsenal has been having problems in defence for a while, and injuries have not helped their cause. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been playing with makeshift backline for the last few games, and Pepe is believed to be an ideal fit for the Gunners.

Thomas Vermaelen has also been sidelined due to an injury since Ausgust , and Sebastian Squillaci on the other hand has not been able to find his feet in English Premier League.  Johan Djourou has show in recent games that he is someone who Wenger can count on, but he is also very prone to injuries and has missed number of games this season.

Laurent Koscielny has been the only man to show consistency and ability this season. Arsene Wenger signed him ahead of the season and he has lived up to the manager’s expectations.

Pepe has been at Real Madrid for three seasons, and the current contract for him ends at the end of next season. Madrid has been in talks with Pepe for a contract extension but no decision has been reached till now.

Pepe is believed to be unhappy with weekly wages, and is among the lowest paid players at Real. The Portuguese has asked for a raise in his wages but Madrid are not ready to accept his asking price. Pepe has reportedly asked that his weekly wages should be doubled.

Arsene Wenger is aware of the ongoing negotiations between the player and his club, and is waiting for the right time to make his move.
