Leonardo and Zanetti confused, Raul calls it a perfect show by Schalke – Champions League news

The Champions League quarter-final has left the Italian giants Inter Milan shocked and deadlocked as Schalke 04 thrashed the men in Black and Blue 5-2 at home. The defeat on home turf was unbelievable as the average runners in the Bundesliga looked in unfathomable form and Inter seemed blacked out.

Dejan Stankovic gave the Nerazzurri a perfect start scoring the opening goal with just 30 seconds on the clock. Joel Matip came up with the expected equalizer in the 17th minute as Die Knappen were looking very strong. Diego Milito managed to register his name in the goal scorers in the 34th minute to give the home team the lead again but Eduardo de Oliveira equalized for the Germans ending the first half at 2-2.

The second half was a nightmare for the Serpent as Raul netted the 3rd goal for the Miners 8 minutes into the progression followed by Andrea Ranocchia scoring the 4th goal. Oliveira registered the 5th and final goal for the Bundesliga outfit from 15 minutes to stoppage time. Inter looked under pressure and couldn’t manage to create enough chances and when the opportunities existed, a bad finisher added to the cause.

The Inter head coach Leonardo Araujo reckons it to be an impossible result and it has been a shock for the Italian players. The Brazilian reckons it to be the worst week in the season as the Black and Blues lost the derby to the bitter city rivals AC Milan killing their chances of winning the Scudetto and now have been put under pressure by an underdog from the Bundesliga in the Champions League.

The coach after the match seemed very disappointed and talking to media after the defeat said:

“It has been a terrible week. We started so well, it was impossible to even imagine it would end this way. Schalke had six or seven shots on goal, scoring with five of them.”

On the other hand, Inter’s star defensive midfielder and captain, Javier Zanetti seemed to be in a deep shock after the loss and fell short of words to explain the reasons. The captain was sad to have disappointed the fans who kept chanting the phrase ‘we will never leave you’ till the end of the game. Talking to the reporters after the game, Zanetti said:

“I cannot understand what happened. I can’t even explain it to myself, let alone to you. We had a good start, and then there was a black-out. We have to stay calm, look ahead and think positive.”

The German outfit was delighted on the victory over the favourites for the quarter-final. The Spanish veteran Raul was amongst the goal scorers in the first leg at San Siro. In his post match comments, the striker said:

“We played a fantastic game; perfect performance. It’s not often you see five goals scored away from home in Europe on the turf of the reigning champions, but there are another 90 minutes to go.”

Inter will go to Veltins-Arena on 13th April for the 2nd leg of the quarter-final. The Treble pursuers are going towards a bad end to the season after putting up great back-to-back performances in Serie A and the Champions League.
