La Liga Match Report: Schalke 04 versus Hamburg SV, 0-1

It was ‘Van the Man’, Ruud van Nistelrooy who came to Hamburg’s assistance in acquiring 3 points for a victory against Schalke. He became the saviour yet again for his team in a match that could have possibly been his last for the club.

The Dutch legend hammered the lone goal of the match during the 53rd minute to confirm victory for his club at Arena AufSchalke. Rumours are rife relating the former great from Manchester United to Real Madrid.

Real Madrid happen to be on the look for a world class player and Nistelrooy already having proved his worth when allegiance with Old Trafford was strong is too attractive an offer to let go by. The Portuguese manager of Los Blancos Jose Mourinho will provide more information on signing him in the next few hours.

On the other hand there were two former players from Santiago Bernabeu who had nothing to boast about. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Raul gave a forgettable show for their defeat. They both were clearly out of form hence making their club suffer yet another defeat with start of the New Year.

They lost their first match with the start of 2011 by 2 goals to 1. However they were up for it in this match as the team certainly put forth effort in acquiring a victory.

It was Christoph Moritz who changed course of the match early as he helped Schalke remain on true course in the 26th minute. He made an impressive clearance after goalkeeper Manuel Neuer failed in judging a corner kick which left an open Gojko Kacar to score the goal.

Just minutes later Schalke were about to draw first blood via penalty kick with Eljero Elia handing the ball inside the box but the referee saw no harm and continued with the game.

Both sides had dominated by the end of the first half. As both teams went into their respective locker rooms to be briefed up by their managers it was expected new strategies will be formulated on pitch in the second half.

Elia was the man under spot light again as he wasted his opportunity to score in the second half with recklessly connected shot that flew off target.

Nonetheless Van Nistelrooy took it away from them in the 53rd minute. The 32-year-old striker headed a cross from Guy Demel on to the far post from close range, leaving Neuer for dead in the process.

Schalke came on strong too late as Christian Pander wasted free kick wide from 25 yards out. Lukas Schmitz also came close to scoring in the injury time but his shot was only able to touch outside of the net.
