Kolkata vs. Kochi: Gautam Gambhir and Mahela Jayawardene – Captaincy Analysis – IPL-4

The 22nd match of the DLF Indian Premier League 2011, between Kolkata Knight Riders and Kochi Tuskers Kerala will be played on Wednesday, 20 April, at Kolkata. Both sides are fired up for a win against each other.

Bettor.com presents a comparative analysis of two captains from both sides. Amongst the Knight Riders, we have the destructive and smashing player, Gautam Gambhir. On the other side, the Tuskers have the very experienced, Mahela Jayawardene.

The Kolkata Knight Riders Captain: Gautam Gambhir

Feisty and energetic, Gautam Gambhir, has explored himself as the most complete batsman in all three forms of cricket. A left-handed top-order batsman, Gambhir, loves to play aggressively and build up his team’s innings quickly by hitting strongly almost everywhere in the park. A valuable replacement after Rahul Dravid’s departure from One Day International cricket, Gambhir has slotted himself as a match winning player in the Indian squad.

In two big winning titles, in the World T20 Championship final against Pakistan in 2007 and against Sri Lanka in the just ended ICC World Cup 2011, Gambhir was the top-scorer. He was awarded with the ‘Man of the Match’ against Pakistan in the 2007 T20 World Cup final.

In the T20 format of the game, Gambhir proved to be a quick run-getter for his team. In the IPL games, he is leading the Kolkata Knight Riders team well. Gambhir’s team has won three matches out of the four matches played in this IPL-4. The side has lost one encounter and look determined to put up a show in the rest of the tournament.

The most expensive player of the IPL, Gambhir is a part of the Kolkata Knight Rider team in this edition of the IPL. In the earlier in three editions of the tournament, he was representing the Delhi Daredevils team.

In the IPL, he has played 44 matches and has scored 1237 runs, setting his average at 33.43 with a highest score of 86 runs. To prove his mettle as a reliable player, Gambhir has scored nine half-centuries in the IPL seasons so far.

In the 2008 season, Gambhir smashed 534 runs in 14 games. In the 2009 IPL edition, Gambhir scored 286 runs in 15 matches. In the last IPL season, he scored 277 runs in 11 matches.

The left-handed player made his T20 International cricket debut against Scotland at Durban in 2007. He has featured in 23 T20 matches for India and has scored 621 runs, with an average of 28.22 runs. He has scored six half-centuries in this format of the game.

The Kochi Tuskers Kerala Captain: Mahela Jayawardene

Mahela Jayawardene, with his batting temperament and sharp fielding has proved himself as a real asset for Sri Lankan Cricket. His role for his country, as a middle-order batsman has earned him a lot of respect as a great player as he has performed brilliantly throughout his long career.

One of the two new teams in this edition of the IPL, Kochi Tuskers Kerala will be headed by Jayawardene. He is among the 15th highest scoring batsman in the IPL, having played 40 IPL matches, he has scored 929 runs.

The 33-year-old player has played 93 domestic T20s and has scored 2246 runs, managing an average of 30.35.

The Kochi Tuskers team started well in their debut IPL season. Jayawardene XI had lost their first two games against the Royal Challenger Bangalore and the Pune Warriors India. However, the Tuskers have won their other two games played against the Mumbai Indians and the Chennai Super Kings.

Despite the amount of talent both batsmen possess, Jayawardane has the edge because of the time he has spend on the crease all over the world. Also, he has been leading the national side for a longer period of time, understanding the responsibility which a captain has on the field.

Gambhir’s performances cannot be overlooked either. His ability to play match-winning knocks was seen clearly in the concluded World Cup. Both skippers will be looking to prove a point, going into an important fixture to be played at the historic Eden Gardens tomorrow.
