  • Jose Mourinho Decision: Selfishness or Intelligence

Saturday night was game day in Spanish La Liga after a long international break. All top four clubs were hoping to remain firm on their spots. With Barcelona and Valencia wining, and Real Madrid losing to Sporting Gijon, a new debate has circulated amongst the sport’s fans.

Madrid entered the match with their star players missing because of injury and suspensions. Christiana Ronaldo, Ricardo Kaka, Marcelo and Karim Benzema were all absent from the squad for the clash against Sporting Gijon. In spite of all these missing star players, the match against Sporting Gijon should have been an easy going for the whites who had every reason to win the match and create pressure on the league topers Barcelona. Furthermore the long injured striker Higuain was back in the team and was looking quite fit to start the match in the whites.

Jose Mourinho missing stars were not the only star players missing from the playing-11. Mourinho rested some of other crucial players as well along with opting to not start the match with his star striker Higuain. His decisions and tactics cost Madrid the match that very truly ended their hopes of wining this year’s league. Not only that, it ended nine years of Mourinho’s ruling on his home soil and added to the misery of fans that should now be ready to face another failed season of Madrid.

Madrid is playing Tottenham Hotspurs in the champions League quarter finals on Tuesday at home. The match is highly anticipated as world over fans don’t know the capability and danger that is offered by London base club in the European competitions. Losing tactics and negative energy in the match against Sporting was enough to add misery to the players as well. Is all the that a part of Mourinho’s plan? Or was it just a selfish approach from the Portuguese born coach.

First of all, lets note that, the Special One has hinted that he could very well leave Real Madrid at the end of season and will join EPL. So this could be the first and last opportunity for Jose to leave a mark, if any, on the Spanish League generally and Real Madrid particularly.

Mourinho is world renowned because of his performance in the Champions League. He, as a manager, is amongst the elite group of Managers that are able to win the trophy from two different leagues. Wining it from Spain would make it three and that would make him first ever manager to win the trophy from three different league. So the match against Sporting; the negative tactics and announcing that he now has no hopes of wining the league, could be the selfish approach of the coach in making his team focus towards the Champions League. In doing so, it would be in the best of interests of him to win the trophy and leave for EPL the very next season.

That said, it could also have been a very intelligent play from Jose. The fact is now quite obvious that Barcelona are the best club in Spain and beating them in league is like crossing a river without a boat. But Champions league is a two leg encounter and here it is possible to challenge any team. So, in order to make things moving for the fans, players and club, Jose Mourinho has intelligently shifted focus of his team on one single trophy that could later on prove to be morale booster for the whole club.

Whatever it is, nothing is beyond Mourinho and he rightly is known to be ‘Special One’.
