Jose Luis Oltra sacked as Almeria’s team coach after poor La Liga showdown

The La Liga outfitters Almeria has dismissed the services of Jose Luis Oltra as team head coach after his team’s debacle continued on Sunday against Athletic Bilbao. The club has announced this decision on Almeria’s latest devastating 3-1 defeat against Joaquin Caparros’s Athletic Bilbao.

The Almeria’s club statement read “The Valencian coach is no longer manager of the Rojiblancos. Sporting director Alberto Benito communicated this to him at the beginning of the afternoon, once the morning training session was over. The club took this decision in the understanding that a change is needed in the team dynamic as there are still chances to achieve safety, which at the moment is four points away.”

Throughout this La Liga Season, Almeria has been hammered by different teams and they have struggled to play as a composed unit under the coaching role of Oltra. Due to continuous poor performances, Almeria found themselves placed on the bottom of the Spanish Primera Liga table which is nothing short of a huge disappointment for the millions of Almeria fans.

In the last match against Athletic Bilbao, Almeria took a dream start to get the lead in the 6th minute with the help of Pablo Piatti’s brilliance, but they couldn’t hold on to their nerves and Bilbao, by making a perfect comeback hampered Oltra’s men 3-1.

According to the media reports, the club director, Alberto Benito made his mind to sack Oltra when he was supervising a morning training session on Tuesday at Estadio de los Juegos Mediterraneos.

The former Levante and Tenerife coach, Oltra had coached Almeria on 18 occasions but only four times Almeria got over the victory line. The only good performance that Almeria gave during Oltra’s tenure was when they reached into the semi-finals of Copa del Ray, where Barcelona defeated them. With a negative goal difference of 20 goals, and 14 demoralizing defeats this season, Almeria have only secured five wins in this La Liga season.

The former 42-year-old, Oltra took over the Almeria’s coaching role in November 2010 by replacing Juanma Lillo, who was also sacked by the club. Juanmo Lillo was sacked, when Almeria got a humiliating 8-0 defeat from the current toppers Barcelona. The decision taken by Almeria at that time to appoint Oltra did raise the eyebrows of many Almeria stakeholders because, it was believed that Nestor Gorosito would be the man who would be offered the coaching job of Almeria.

Almeria needs to stand up on their feet if they want themselves to see in the next La Liga season. Almeria, who are placed in the relegation zone along with Hercules and Zaragoza, could get the top-flight status if they do well in the remainder of the season.
