  • Jenson Button celebrates momentous Bathurst run

Jenson Button turns out as the first man in time to lap the famous Bathurst circuit in an F1 car. Button accomplished five laps around the circuit ahead of this weekend’s Australian Grand Prix, in McLaren MP4-23 with the unofficial record of a fastest lap according to the Australian media.

The 31-year-old made a speedy lap of 1minute 48seconds, which is around 20 seconds faster than the official lap record set in last year's Bathurst 1000.

The race was arranged by Vodafone, the title sponsor for McLaren Formula One team. Craig Lowndes, the V8 Supercar driver of the Vodafone team also got into the F1 car to turn his own laps on the occasion, while Button was given the chance to try out Lowndes’ V8 Supercar.

Button has always been inspired by the iconic track and was very excited celebrating the unofficial fastest lap in a F1 car. He rated it as a unique experience, as he enjoyed controlling the car on the straights and is eager for a chance to get more laps on the circuit.

Talking of the experience he said, “I haven’t hammered a car over kerbs like that for 12 years so it was a new experience for me and something I’ve missed. I was holding on tight all the way. It takes everything out of you. It was the experience I’ve wanted to have for many years and I’ve finally done it. In a way it’s probably not a good thing because it’s made me more hungry to come back.”

The British driver’s performance in the V8 car was sufficient to direct Roland Dane, the Team Vodafone chief to declare that he would be enthused to see the Button join the various champions for a forthcoming race.

Dane said, “Jenson did a great job, jumping in our car, but you don’t win a world championship by accident. He was always going to be quick, regardless of what race car he jumps in.”

Dane was also delighted by the fact the Button liked the drive in their car and told the driver he was welcome anytime he wanted to join. He also acknowledged the driver’s busy schedule and offered that if he ever gets bored in the impending seasons he can look forward to the opportunities in Vodafone team.
