  • IPL 2011: Mumbai Indian crushes Kings XI Punjab by 23 runs.

Mumbai Indians defeated Kings XI Punjab by 23 runs at the Wankhede Stadium Mumbai courtesy some good batting performance backed by brilliant display of bowling. Kings XI Punjab won the toss and chose to field first. Mumbai Indians lost its first wicket on just 15 runs when Davy Jacobs was clean bowled by Bipul Sharma for 10 runs. He did however dispatch 2 exclusive boundaries.

The partnership between Sachin Tendulkar and Ambati Rayudu  anchored the Mumbai Indians innings. These two batsmen played exuberantly and showed great command on the crease. They made their presence felt on the crease by putting up 95 runs stand. Rayudu completed his blistering half century and was ultimately sent off the field by Piyush Chawla for 51 runs from just 37 balls. His innings included 8 boundaries and a massive six.

Tendulkar followed after the demise of Rayudu. He was dismissed for a total of 51 runs as well. His wicket went under the name of Ryan Harris. He had 3 boundaries and a six to his name. Kieron Pollard scored a lightning fast knock of 20 runs from 11 deliveries having a boundary and 2 sixes to his name until he got caught on the bowling of Chawla.

The wicket of Rohit Sharma fell when the total on the board was 158 runs in 19.5 overs. He contributed a 18 runs to the scorecard and was dismissed under the name of Ryan Harris. Andrew Symonds remained unbeaten on 4 runs while Tirumalasetti Suman remained not out without facing a ball when the Mumbai Indians innings ended at a  final total of 159 runs with the loss of 5 wickets in complete 20 overs.

In reply, Kings XI Punjab lost its first wicket very early as Adam Gilchrist got out LBW to Harbhajan Singh for 1 run. Paul Valthaty and Shaun Marsh took the responsibility to progress the Kings XI Punjab innings forward from thereon. They played exceptionally well and brought the score card at 73 runs until Valthaty was picked up by Symonds for 33 runs. He had 1 four and 2 sixes under his name.

David Hussey could not rise to the occasion and was dismissed for only 1 run by Munaf Patel. Dinesh Karthik was also given out LBW for 1 run on the bowling of Pollard. This forced Kings XI Punjab at 83 for 4 in 13.2 overs.

Abhishek Nayar was looking good for his 14 runs but unfortunate for him, could not go any further. He was caught on the bowling of Harbhajan Singh. Bipul Sharma was clean bowled by Lasith Malinga for only 1 run which forced Kings XI Punjab to 116 for 6 in 16.4 overs.

Eventually all hoped for Kings XI Punjab ended when Shaun Marsh was dismissed by Malinga for 61 outstanding runs. His knock included 8 boundaries. Ryan Harris could not sustain at the crease for any more than 1 run. He became a victim at the hands of Patel.

Finally Piyush Chawla and Praveen Kumar remained not out for 10 runs and 2 runs respectively when the 20 over innings for Kings XI Punjab was completed at a final total of 136 with a loss of 8 wickets. This inflicted a 23 runs defeat upon Kings XI Punjab. Kieron Pollard was announced the man of the match for his great all round performance.
