Hockey India constantly losing officials over administrative issues

The Indian Hockey team is driving on the right track after lifting the gold medal in the inaugural edition of the Asian Champions Trophy; however, the situation in the national governing body is exacerbating with every passing day. Senior officials of the Hockey India (HI) are getting dissatisfied by the working of the body.

Colonel Balbir Singh – the member of the Selection Committee – in the recent move while parting away from the national hockey’s governing body added his name into the long list of administrators who quit their posts due to working issues.  He has differences with the selection committee over the administrative matters.

Earlier, Shukhbir Grewal – the Development Director and Pargat Singh – the Chairman Technical Committee left their posts while criticising the adhocracy of Hockey India. Grewal while speaking to the media had stated that there was no need of anyone else when all the decisions being taken by the one person. He said, “There is a committee that decided on coaches for Indian teams, but suddenly Harendra Singh is made the chief coach of the junior team and no one knows about it. You have one person signing up as coach (Mukesh Kumar) during selection of probables in morning and someone else taking charge in evening! How can anyone work like this?”

It is vital to mention here that Grewal was a key member of the supporting staff of Michael Nobbs – the coach of the Indian hockey team. This decision will also affect the ongoing training camp underway in Bangalore in preparations of the Australia-Tour. The situation has been more troubling after Hockey India discarded Baljit Saini – the assistant coach without appointing his substitute.

Saini while explaining the situation said that he was told by a member of the core group of the coach that he would take care of the development squad. However, he stated that no development squad exist up till now. It is vital to mention here that HI Secretary General Narinder Batra had stated in his statement that Mukesh Kumar – the coach of the junior side was replaced with Harendra Singh while the former will take care of the development squad. He was of the opinion that first they would have to wait for the development team then will decide about its coach.

Narinder Batra – the Secretary General of HI has had no tension in losing the officials. He informed that the tenure of the many officials has been ended and they would form up new committees in October. He said they do not problem if some officials were not ready to continue their services with the governing body. There are many former players available for the substitutions, he added.
