Harnik and Muller impress in midfield: German Bundesliga Team of the Week – Week 32

Bayern Munich and VfB Stuttgart came closer to achieving their respective ambitions in the Week 32 of the German Bundesliga. Lets take a look at the top players who made a difference for their sides in the weekend.

Right Midfielder

Arjen Robben (Bayern Munich)

The Dutchman was the focal point of controversy last week. After criticizing Bastian Schweinsteiger and Philip Lahm in an interview, the Dutchman had to make it up to his team-mates. Bayern Munich hosted Schalke 04 on Saturday in a match that was crucial for the side’s chances of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. Furthermore, Robben owed his team a lot after a needless suspension saw him miss last week’s 1-1 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Bayern Munich breezed past the side from Gelsenkirchen as they beat the Royal Blues 4-1. In that game, Robben was Munich’s most dangerous player if not lethal. The former Real Madrid man responded to his critics by scoring an opening goal. Although Robben had nine attempts on goal, he could not score another goal. Robben was a constant threat to the Schalke defence and consistently found himself a lot of space in the Schalke half.

Central attacking midfielder

Martin Harnik (VfB Stuttgart)

The Austrian International was Stuttgart’s most influential player as his side came back from a goal down to beat Hoffenheim 2-1. The 23-year old provided Cacau an assist for the equaliser and then won a penalty that was converted by Zdravko Kuzmanovic. This season, the former Werder Bremen man has scored five goals in 16 games for VfB Stuttgart and his recent return to form would be vital in the Swabians’ escape from a relegation fight.

Left midfielder

Thomas Muller (Bayern Munich)

21-year-old Thomas Muller has taken the Bundesliga by storm since his debut for Bayern Munich last season. The youngster was dominant for Munich on the counterattack and was by far the best player on the pitch. Schalke could not contain the German International. Muller took eight shots on goal and two of those efforts turned into goals. Muller raised his stock further by providing an assist and to prove the fact that on his day he can be a world class player.

Centre Forwards

Papiss Demba Cisse (Freiburg)

The Senegal International just can’t stop scoring this season. The 25-year-old was once again in fine form as Freiburg beat Hamburg away from home 2-0. Cisse scored both goals and took his tally to 24 for the season. Now, Papiss Cisse is the second topscorer of the Bundesliga behind Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez.

Milivoje Novakovic (Cologne)

The 31-year-old Slovenian International was in fine form as Cologne beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 in the North Rhineland derby. The veteran scored a brace that not only won Cologne the bragging rights, but effectively eliminated Bayer Leverkusen’s title hopes. Furthermore, Saturday’s win has almost ensured Cologne a place in the 2011-12 German Bundesliga.

Honourable Mentions

Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund)

Marco Reus (Borussia Monchengladbach)

Cacau (VfB Stuttgart)
