  • Gonzalo Higuain: Fulfillment of a Promise

Real Madrid’s striker Gonzalo Gerardo Higuain will be in the FIFA World Cup stage for the second time already at a young age of 22, although he was a non-playing member in the 2006 contingent. He was born in Brest, France and was invited to play for Les Bleus but turned down the offer to play for his home country Argentina, a decision he will never regret.

This very promising man, who wears the number 20 jersey, started his career with River Plate in 2004. And in 2006, Coach Daniel Passarella dropped statements that pertain to the bright future ahead of the very talented Higuain. True enough, after four years, he just walked out of the field with three furious goals in the 2010 FIFA World Cup against Korea Republic.

He spent only ten months in France before his family went back to Argentina. He returned to his home country in 1998 to accompany his father Jorge Nicolas Higuain to undertake a scouting job for Passarella. And as fate dictates, the same man, after eight years, gave him a team and made him shine.

In 2007, Real Madrid noticed the huge potential this young blood has and readily signed him in a six-year 13 million deal. Higuain was overwhelmed by how his dreams were being realized and this time with a major European club. His first game with the club was against Real Zaragoza. His intensity saw him fire several scoring chances and an incredible assist that brought them the 1-0 victory at home. In February of 2007, he scored the much anticipated first goal of his career in a draw against Atletico Madrid. Higuain’s started to strike the football world as he fired a game winning shot against RCD Espanyol. This also placed Real Madrid ahead of their archrival FC Barcelona at the top of the competition and later on saw them win their 30th crown. It was also this Argentinean young hero who nailed goals and made the winning assist in 2008 as Real Madrid won the La Liga for the 31st time. Against Barcelona, he was surprised to be coming off the bench but he still displayed some devastating acts and crushed their rivals in a 4-1 win.

In that same year, he fired another game-winning shot to power Real Madrid to their 8th Supercopa de España. He firmly grounded his starting spot for the club in 2009 after an impressive pre-season showing. He finished the season as the squad’s leading scorer with 22 goals in the league and he finished the following season with 27 goals, to place second to his fellow Argentinean Lionel Messi.

Higuain was feared for his overwhelming pace, powerful drives and outstanding dribbling ability.

The La Albiceleste opened their 2010 FIFA World Cup campaign against Nigeria at Johannesburg’s Ellis Park Stadium and the Argentinean squad graced a convincing 1-0 victory.

Gonzalo Higuain and the rest of Diego Maradona’s squad showed the whole world why they are one of the teams to beat in this year’s FIFA World Cup. The South American team, which has already won two World Cup crowns in 1978 and 1986, squashed the Korean Republic in 4-1 in their second game in this year’s World Cup.

In an interview after their game against Nigeria, where he was scoreless, Higuain hoped that goals will come for him against the Korea Republic. This statement met its fulfillment, as he fired goals at Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg. Higuain notched three of those four goals posted by Argentina. Higuain demolished the Asian team as he scored at will, which destroyed the morale of South Korea.
