German Bundesliga scouting report –Joel Matip

Currently, Sven Bender of Borussia Dortmund and Lars Bender of Bayer Leverkusen are considered to be the best prospects for the defensive midfielder position in the German national team in the near future. However, this season has seen some other youngsters in the same position who can stake their claim for a spot in the national set-up. This season, Joel Matip, Kevin Pezzoni and Phillip Bargfrede have come into prominence and are slowly making their way towards a national team call-up (bar Joel Matip who now plays for Cameroon).

19-year old Joel is son of Jean Matip who was a Cameroonian international player. His son Joel spent most of his youth in the Schalke youth academy after the club signed him from VfL Bochum in 2000.

In 2009, the youngster was offered his first pro-contract by Schalke. Since then, the youngster hasn’t looked back. In his first full season, Matip made 25 appearances for Schalke and scored 3 goals. This was just the start of things as the budding talent continued the road towards progression and in this season, he has been a regular player in the starting XI for Schalke. Although he is a versatile midfielder and can play in many positions in the midfield, Felix Magath used him as a defensive midfielder, where he has been a revelation. This season, he has played in the defensive positions as well (centre-half, right-back, left-back). Standing at 1.93 m tall, the youngster is a constant aerial threat but he needs to improve on his physical strength in order to become a more imposing figure in the centre of the park.

The youngster was ignored by German national team coach, Joachim Loew last year and in March 2010, he was offered a chance to play for his native Cameroon which he did. Since then, the youngster has played 5-times for the African giants and so, he won’t be playing for Germany any more.

The future

The youngster has so far made 23 appearances for Schalke and 11 of those appearances have been starts. Although Matip hasn’t featured as regularly for the German club as he did last season, he is one player that Schalke should hold on to for next season and for coming seasons. At the age of just 19, the Cameroonian has age on his side and he can be one of the best players in the Schalke side for years if he keeps on progressing the way he has been for the past 2 years.

Best moment

He made his Bundesliga debut on 7th November 2009 in a crunch game against Bavarian giants Bayern Munich. He scored an equalizer on his debut and earned his side a point and was subsequently named the man of the match on his debut.
