Gerard Pique shines at Camp El Madrigal as Barca whips Villarreal to 1 - 0

At the end of the much happening week, in which Sporting Gijon crashed Real Madrid by 1 - 0 at home thereby shattering their title hopes, the gap between the Primera division leaders seems to have increased after FC Barcelona whipped Villarreal at Camp El Madrigal to 1 - 0. The visitors showed a great agility and mobility on the field and snatched the victory thereby stretching the lead at the table by eight points. The visitors proved the coin by scoring a maiden goal and keeping the deadlock till final whistle. The 24-year-old center back, Gerard Pique, found a place in the back of the net at 67th minute when he controlled a flick on his chest provided by Sergio Busquets and put the ball into the net and left spectators go wild. The Barca dugout was quite sparked at the marvelous effort by the Spain International.

FC Barcelona is left with eight more games in the La Liga and they are enjoying a convincing lead over Santiago Bernabeu. Barca had already done well so far in the current spell of the season where they have to battle on three main fronts. Barca coach, Pep Guardiola’s charisma seems to have helped Catalan giants to win the Triplete [treble] competition. They have already cruised to the quarter finals of Champions League and also scheduled to face the arch rivals, Real Madrid, in the final of Copa del Rey.

Barcelona boss gave rest to the Argentinean maestro, Lionel Messi, after an injury scare on International duty with Argentina in Euro 2012 qualifying game. Coach Pep Guardiola has led his team to the victory stand twice in the five Clasicos he had played.  After the Villarreal game, he asserted that Villarreal is a good team and are capable of big surprises. The 40-year-old visitor said, “If you declare yourself champion with an eight-point lead and eight games left you can only lose the league. In the end the league is only won when it is won. We have some terribly difficult matches coming up. Madrid is always Madrid and they will fight to the end.”

The former Barca midfielder added, “We got the better of the third-placed team and made them run. We didn't have that many chances but we were more concerned with controlling the game. It was a great win.”

Barcelona is leading the chart with 81 points ahead of Real Madrid with 73 points after Real Madrid faced a shock defeat. Jose Mourinho;s team would be hosting FC Barcelona in two weeks before the final clash of Copa del Rey. Also they have tough away clashes with Sevilla, Villarreal and Valencia.
