Fiorentina’s Romulo is the new-age Cafu, boosts Brazilian coach Carlos Dunga – Serie A Update

The former Brazilian national team tactician Carlos Dunga has hailed Fiorentina’s latest signing Romulo as the new age Marcos Cafu. Cafu is regarded as one the best right-backs ever and the footballer is a legend in history books. The comparison of Romulo to the greatest ever is great honour for the 24-year-old Brazilian.

Romulo was on a loan to the Brazilian Serie A club Atletico Paranaense since April this year. However, on his return to his owner outfit Cruzeiro Esporte Clube, Fiorentina advanced on the footballer and offered the Brazilian side 2 million Euros for the transfer. The move was officially confirmed by the Tuscan giants on Thursday stating that the player has arrived at Stadio Artemio Franchi for the 2011/12 season.

The Brazilian right-back has impressed his national team coach very much and the former Inter Milan player, while Corriere dello Sport, hailed Romulo as the finest of the current age.

“He reminds me of Marcos Cafu. He can reach the by-line remarkably easily. Romulo has tactical intelligence and above all incredible precision in sending crosses to the middle of the box.”

Many critics have also compared the young defender with the likes of Douglas Maicon. The Inter Milan right wing back is one the most important players of the Nerazzurri since his arrival at San Siro in July 2006.

However, the 47-year-old former defensive midfielder believes that his Romulo has little similarities with Maicon and his main attributes are very close to Cafu. The coach believes that Romulo and Cafu both have the same agility and stamina and that is something that makes the comparison.

“In Brazil many say he reminds them of Douglas Maicon and Cafu, but in my view the similarity is only really with Cafu.  Maicon is a different player, whereas Romulo has that same speed and change of pace as the former Roma right-back,” concluded the Brazil national team coach.

The Viola finished 9th in the Serie last term and are keen to make a comeback in the 2011/12 season. The addition of Romulo would definitely help them strengthen their back line.
