FC Porto’s James Rodriguez suffers injury on duty with Columbia at the U-20 World Cup – Report

FC Porto youngster James Rodriguez suffered a painful injury in his left hand while playing for Columbia in the U-20 World Cup and could potentially miss out on the next match against Mali.

Rodriguez shined for Columbia in the last match but was unfortunate to pick up an injury following a great domestic campaign.

The highly rated winger opted to part ways with Banfield to sign for the Portistas last year and became an immediate hit at the Estadio do Dragao during his debut season.

While being overshadowed by the likes of Hulk, Radamel Falcao and Fredy Guarin, Rodriguez’s proved his abilities to Andre Villas-Boas after he made 26 appearances and scored 12 goals for the Portuguese giants.

Despite being only 20 years old, the starlet has added a lot of medals to his name and was the proud member of the Porto side that won the Portuguese Primeira Liga, UEFA Europa League, Portuguese Cup and Portuguese Super Cup.

After shining for the Dragons in his maiden campaign, Rodriguez was rightfully called up to the Columbia U-20 team for the World Cup, which is incidentally being held in his native country.

The former Envigado man was impressive in his team’s 4-1 thrashing of France and scored through a penalty to cap off a great display.

However the talented attacker injured his left-hand during the encounter against the French and could now possibly miss the fixture against Mali.

Columbian team doctor, Nelson Rodriguez, said the injury had been very painful due to the soft tissues in the hand and also explained that it was up to the coach whether the mercurial front man took to the field in next match.

“The coach will decide whether James will play against Mali or not play head to Mali, "he said.

While the injury is minor and is likely to heal quickly, it will be an obvious risk if the manager drafted the Dragao man in the next match and it could deteriorate the problem further.

But all in all, Rodriguez is likely to miss FC Porto’s first clash against Vitoria Guimaraes, as he will be given a break following his exertions for the Columbian National team in World Cup, which concludes on the 20th of August.
