English Premier League Preview: Chelsea Vs Manchester City

With Arsenal and Manchester United battling for the English Premier League title, the match between the third and fourth place teams does not carry much importance at this stage. Both these teams had the credentials at the beginning of this season but after a series of inconsistent performances they have little hope left for the title. However, the Champions League finish is important as Tottenham Hotspur is also around the corner in fifth position.

This clash is also important in the sense that the big spenders of Premiership are going to face each other. Chelsea spent a lot in creating their squad but these players have failed to perform consistently this season. The likes of Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka could not find enough goals, which led to the signing of Fernando Torres in the January transfer window. However, the £50 million signing has also not been able to score any goal for the Blues.

Manchester City also followed the example of Chelsea in spending to get a squad together. In this process, a number of poor signings were made by Roberto Mancini and the squad remains thin for the manager, despite having a lot of players in reserves. Everything depends on the striker Carlos Tevez who is their leading scorer this season. Tevez also has a great record against Chelsea as he has scored 6 goals in 5 encounters. Apart from the Argentinean, David Silva and Mario Balotelli will share the responsibility in leading the attack for their team.

Both these teams are coming into this match after a midweek clash in Europe. Chelsea hosted FC Copenhagen but was unable to score despite creating many chances. Nevertheless, they moved into the quarter finals on aggregate and are going to face their rivals Manchester United. City had a reverse fortune as they were knocked out of the UEFA Europa league. However, City has the psychological advantage as they have won the last three matches played between both sides.

The key player for Chelsea would be their Spanish striker Fernando Torres. Ever since coming from Liverpool, Torres has not made an impact at his new club. A performance is long overdue from the forward, who has not been able to shine since the beginning of this season. There is no doubt that he is one of the best players in his top form with the deadly combination of speed, acceleration, strength and precise finishing. However, that Torres has been forgotten and a performance against Manchester City might prove to be the catalyst for him to recover.

The main player for Manchester City will also be a Spaniard David Silva. Silva has had some memorable performances at Eastland this season and he has established himself as a great attacking midfielder. He has the ability to disrupt the opposition defence with his dribbling runs and fine passing. Although, City does not have any shortage of great players but Silva has been outperforming most of his teammates this season. He will have to be stopped by Chelsea if they need to keep City away from their goal.

The Sunday’s match will bring forth a great battle between two physical sides. In that scenario, the battle between Michael Essien and Yaya Toure will definitely be important in determining the result of the tie. Both these players have strong physical presence and a solid presence in the midfield of their respective sides. However, as Essien focuses on the defensive side of the midfield, Toure has shifted to attack after joining City from Barcelona. Therefore, both these players will go head to head against each other and will definitely make the encounter more entertaining for the fans.

The winner of Sunday’s match will be more comfortable in finishing within the Champions League position, while the other team will still be in doldrums. Therefore, it will be an entertaining battle as every point is important at this stage in the season.
