  • David Beckham to captain Los Angeles Galaxy against Real Salt Lake

David Beckham once again gets an opportunity to captain the Los Angeles Galaxy in the 2011 Major League Soccer after three years. He will wear the captaincy armband in a game against the Real Salt Lake on Saturday at Rio Tinto Stadium.

He has regained the job from the United State international Landon Donovan who is going to miss the MLS game because of his international duties. He has left the MLS team to join the US national team for an exhibition game against the South American Argentina in East Rutherford. Though, the job is of temporary nature but Beckham will have to deliver goods to justify the confidence that has been shown in him.

“Yeah, Bruce has asked me to wear it, and I will be proud to wear it, it does not change the way I play. It is something you are very proud to wear, but you need more that one leader on the field,” Beckham said.

Previously, the midfielder was asked to lead the Galaxies at the time of his joining with the club in 2007. However, he could not gain much to greet the club in his first turn as captain and Donovan took over the captaincy from him after October 26, 2008. Beckham went on to join Real Madrid club AC Milan on loan at the start of the 2009 MLS campaign which was one of the reasons of his quit from the captaincy. Now, when someone was suppose to take Donovan’s place, the head coach Bruce Arena found the former England captain Beckham suitable for it.

No doubt, it going to be a tough call for the Galaxy boys to focus themselves in the absence of Donovan and competing against the in-form RSL who has recently performed well in the CONCACAF champion league. Juninho Pernambucano is going to be a key man and Galaxy will be hoping him to strike again. The most challenging thing for Beckham and Bruce is to make their players believe that they can be the one to beat the RSL at home for the first time. RSL did not have a single defeat at Rio Tinto and possess a 35 games unbeaten run at home. The MLS veterans Todd Dunivant, Donovan Ricketts, Gregg Berhalter, and the recent acquisition Juan Pablo Angel will have to assist Beckham with their leadership skills. However, it is going to be very difficult for Beckham to get a win in this acting job but a better application of offensive skills on field could give him a chance to be there with a famous win.

“He is logical choice and he is worn the captain armband here before and probably in a couple of other places as well, I do not think it is asking too much,” Bruce said.
