Damien Comolli:"Selling Torres was a no-brainer" & Kuyt ready to sign new Reds deal

Damien Comolli the director of football at Anfield has admitted that it was a great idea to sell off Fernando Torres to Chelsea.  The world cup winning striker from Spain was sold to Chelsea for 50 million pounds on the final day of January Transfer window. The Spaniard had already handed in a transfer request at Liverpool, and it was clear that his heart was not at Mersey side anymore.

Comolli while talking to a British newspaper said that everything that has happened at Anfield since the exit if Torres has been positive. The director of football added that when there is a player in the squad that does not want to be there, it is always a good idea to let him go. He added that in contrast when new players come in who are eager to perform and be part of the team, it lifts the whole team.

Reds used the money earned from the sale of Torres wisely and brought in Andy Carroll from Newcastle and Luis Suarez from Ajax. Carroll has been injured for most of his time, but Suarez has wasted little time in making an instant impact by scoring on his debut.

In comparison, Fernando Torres is still goalless for Chelsea even after making seven appearances. Comolli reiterated that looking at the bigger picture it was Liverpool who had got the better end of the deal.

The Frenchman added: "Getting two players triggered the fact we could sell one who didn't want to be here and get two who did.

"That was really a relief for those reasons. When you get two players like we have done it's very positive for everyone.

Liverpool has recovered well this season and after lingering on the relegation zone for a while in early part of the season, Reds have moved into the 6th place and looking to finish 5th to make it into the Europa League. Fernando Torres managed to score just 9 goals for Liverpool this season in 26 games before making his way to Stamford Bridge.

Meanwhile talking about positive news at Anfield, inform Dutch striker Dirk Kuyt has said that he is ready to commit his future to Liverpool.

The Dutch international that scored a hat trick against Manchester United in the 3-1 win recently, has two more years left on the current deal. He said that he intends to sign a contract extension very soon, which will keep him at the club on long term basis.

Kuyt believes that the future of Liverpool is very bright, and the club is heading in the right direction. He added that he wants to be part of the club’s progress and play a key role in it.

"Liverpool is a club that should be playing for trophies and I guarantee that will happen soon," said Kuyt.

Kuyt went on to say that with the arrival of players like Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez the club has become much stronger, and with time they will keep getting better. The Liverpool striker said that he expects the club to make few more big purchases in the summer, and that will make them much stronger.

Liverpool has not won any trophies in last 5 seasons. The last piece of silverware they won was back in 2006 when they beat West Ham to win the FA Cup. Since the Premier League era they have never been serious contenders for the league title, but with the club looking to turn a corner next season would be an interesting one.
