Colorado Rapids enter the new season to defend the title

Despite the criticism on the reigning MLS champions, Colorado Rapids feel confident as they are about to enter the new 2011 MLS season.

Centre-back Drew Moor negates any news on the weakened defence of the team for the upcoming regular season. The defender said that the team performed in the last season and will perform its best in this season as it starts. Those who say the team is not fully prepared to defend the title should see the results of the preseason match against Los Angeles Galaxy. Rapids won the match 4—2 against former MLS champions. In addition to the goals scored by the forward line-up, Bruce Arena saw the Rapids defence restricting the Galaxy strikers to just a tally of two goals.

The likes of Moor, Marvell Wayne, Japanese Kosuke Kimura and last season’s signing and FC Dallas’ key left-back Anthony Wallace will be the regular starting players as they were in the preseason scrimmage against the Galaxy. The players played better part of the match and were substituted in the last minutes of the second half. However, the Moor was replaced with Scott Palguta some minutes earlier than the rest.

The team still has been unable to answer the questions raised by the critics about the retention of the title in the new season. The cup said by some was not the team’s destiny. The group will however enter the ground in the new season without addressing the questions imposed by the sceptics. It seems that the fans of the team are the only people who are praising the team for their former performance.

In addition to just enough effort, as said by some, put in by the defence to lift up the cup, the forward line-up that comprised of Conor Casey and Omar Cummings proved their mettle in the last season. The team marked a 32-goal haul in the last season which came-up as the fifth best score by any team. This tally eventually proved to be sufficient for the team to take the title home.

The coach of the outfit, Gary Smith and the rest of the management has also recruited some new faces to the team although some of them are not new to the MLS as veteran Tyrone Marshell. This trade however transferred couple of good players to Seattle Sounder FC with the likes of Danny Earls and Julien Baudet.

With some of new faces recruited from the MLS SuperDraft and club transfers the team will be kicking off their first regular season match on March 19 against Protand Timbers at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Colorado. Eddie Ababio, SuperDraft pick No. 18, Sanna Nyassi from Vancouver Whitecaps and Joseph Nane from Toronto FC will be facing their first MLS match representing the Rapids.
