Chelsea Takes the Third Spot with a Victory Over Manchester City

Although, both Chelsea and Manchester City are way behind the leaders Manchester United, but the Champions League spots are still there to fight for. Before this match between the two teams, Chelsea was in fourth place, two points behind City. A victory would have taken them a point clear in third spot and this is what exactly happened at Stamford Bridge.

Manchester City had a setback before coming into this match against the Blues. Their star striker and the leading goal-scorer Carlos Tevez was set to miss the clash because of an injury. The Argentinean striker has scored four goals in the last three successive matches against Chelsea and he was a big miss for this match. Also, his strike partner Mario Balotelli was sitting on the bench as well. The temperamental Italian forward was involved in some kind of a clash with Roberto Mancini and was kept out as a sign of punishment.

In the absence of these two players, James Milner got a rare start for his side. Edin Dzeko was the lone striker for this game with a lot of quality present around him in the midfield. Chelsea had Fernando Torres and Salomon Kalou in their forward line while Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka were kept as substitutes. It was a great moment for John Terry who has recently been reinstated as the captain of England by Fabio Capello.

This was not a great match by any standards as both teams did very little to challenge the opposition’s goalkeepers. Torres and Dzeko were both looking for their first goal in their new shirts since joining in January. However, both the strikers looked extremely shaky and wasted a few half chances that they had during the match.

There were a couple of chances for Chelsea in the first half. Torres had an opening in the box but his shot was intercepted by the defender. Kalou also missed an opportunity when he could not place the ball into the net and shot it directly towards Joe Hart. However, the best chance for Chelsea came early on when Kalou and Ramires tripped over each other when both were trying to finish the move. Manchester City, on the other hand, had rare chances and only Yaya Toure shot from 20 yards which was brilliantly held by Petr Cech.

In the second half, Torres had another chance and he placed it for Florent Malouda. The Frenchman, however, tried to be clever and gave the ball right into the hands of Joe Hart. In the 70th minute, Carlo Ancelotti removed Malouda and Torres and brought in his more experienced players, Drogba and Anelka.

The goal, however, came from an unusual source, the defender David Luiz. The Brazilian placed the ball into the net with a brilliant header and Joe Hart was not able to do much about it. It was his second goal in his new shirt which is a far better performance than Torres who was bought for this very purpose at the same time.

After this goal, City tried to go all out on an attack in search of an equaliser. However, they were never really threatening and Chelsea defended very well. In the injury time, Ramires finished the game with the second goal of the match. The Brazilian made his way past City’s defence before beating Joe Hart, who could do nothing but look towards his defenders in despair. Chelsea won the match and bagged all three points, going clear in search of a Champions League finish.

Manchester City now has a four point gap from fifth place Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool is also lurking around the corner. Now, they have to work hard in future in order to maintain their place in the Champions League for the next season.
